Roots BACK TO THEIR There’s something powerful about coming home. Not just for a visit, but with a purpose. For Dr. Elisabeth Milligan and Dr. Dr. Milligan wanted to make sure that healthcare was the correct pursuit for her. Once she obtained her nursing assistant license, she started her journey at Scheurer Health working as a nursing assistant in Acute Care.

Katelyn Holmes, that purpose is clear: to care for the same communities that helped shape who they are. As two of Scheurer Health’s newest providers, both women bring years of education, clinical experience and personal connection back to the Thumb of Michigan. And while their specialties and stories differ, they share a common thread of having a strong desire to serve the communities in which they were once raised. For Dr. Milligan, medicine was not her original plan but quickly became the right one. Born and raised in Cass City on her family’s cash crop farm, she went to Michigan State University with plans to become an engineer. She quickly discovered that the engineering field was not her passion and it gave her the ability to open the door to a healthcare career. “I wanted more one-on-one interaction but still use problem-solving skills every day. I always knew that I wanted to be in a rural area so I thought that maybe healthcare could help meld those goals together.”

“I found out that I absolutely loved it. If I could work all night, work holidays, work weekends and still be excited to show up and see my patients, this was the career for me.” Back at Michigan State, Dr. Milligan changed her major to nutritional sciences, received her bachelor’s degree and then went on to the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine for medical school. Once in medical school, Dr. Milligan knew that family medicine was the perfect field for her. “I discovered that I wanted to take care of all ages, all stages and build those longitudinal relationships with my patients. Family medicine physicians are in that unique role where they can care for the whole family and support them. That is what I view myself as a physician -- taking care of the whole family from all stages of life.”
