Let’s celebrate payroll
P ayroll professionals are often far too little recognition of the department which deals with the biggest cost to many organisations – paying its staff. Let’s be honest, many people wouldn’t turn up to work if they didn’t get paid, which would have huge knock-on implications, leaving a business unable to function. What sometimes isn’t recognised is that today, there are a vast number of pieces of payroll legislation for payroll teams to be undervalued within businesses. Not in every scenario, but there’s still aware of, to ensure their organisations are compliant, and that staff are being paid correctly. Using payroll skills and technical expertise All payroll professionals will confirm that, if they had to deal with furlough or the changes to statutory sick pay introduced during the pandemic, this will have been one of the most challenging points of their careers. I would say it was at this critical time that payroll professionals had to really utilise all their skills and training in adapting to change quickly and applying technical skills to new legislation to ensure compliance. This was all while working under immense pressure to ensure people were paid both accurately and on time. Those who work in payroll can look back at this time with a sense of pride, knowing that all their hard work and commitment to get this right played a key part in saving jobs and keeping our businesses running. What it also goes to show is that technology has evolved over the years, and Lucy Foster MCIPPdipp, payroll technician / human resource assistant, at Carbolite Gero Ltd, invites you to reflect on the achievements of the payroll profession
