Y ou’re all familiar with making life choices. What you end up choosing can have different effects on your life and those around you. Making the wrong choices with payroll software could have immense effects on the output and satisfaction of your stakeholders and the business. Sounds a bit dramatic but, it seriously could. Having been in the payroll profession for 39 years, I’ve used many different software packages, from the cheapest to the most expensive and complicated. They’re all built to cover the legislation requirements, but some do this better than others. Staying compliant is one of the biggest challenges of payroll processing. However, making mistakes is a human trait and sometimes it happens, simply because the person processing the data doesn’t fully understand the regulations. Of course, with the regulations frequently changing, this is understandable. To be successful in payroll, you must have an inquisitive mind and always be able to challenge what you’re seeing: what does the payslip now look like? What
does that report look like? You cannot rely completely on the software, as I’m sure you’ll all have experienced those ‘glitches’ in the software which happen randomly and inconsistently. I always like to teach the idea to ‘challenge the data and make sure you agree with what the output is.’ Throughout my career, I have experienced many inconsistencies with calculations that should be really simple. Payroll is often seen as reactive, when indeed, in my experience, it needs to be proactive. To be successful in payroll, you certainly need to be adaptable and embrace change. If you’re open to change, you can save time and drive efficiencies in the long run. The payroll software you choose could have insufficient functionality or the payroll team have limited knowledge of the package, which would mean they wouldn’t be able to use it to its full potential. You must work out what you require before settling with your software. Just simply having the right software can save time, money and limit stress. n
