I t’s true what they say; no two days are ever the same in payroll. You could be in the process of running weekly payrolls and have calls transferred to you from clients with queries relating to a whole range of issues, including holiday pay, tax code changes or P45s. When managing more than 200 clients’ payrolls each week / month, the team follows a structured approach to ensure deadlines are met and that the payroll is carried out to the highest of standards. However, these structures and processes don’t account for HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) overpayments, furlough investigations, setting up new pay as you earn (PAYE) schemes, assisting clients through Transfer of Undertakings Protection of Employment regulations, calculating redundancy etc, therefore teamwork is essential to ensure that deadlines are met with additional work being carried out in the department. As progression throughout the department occurs, it’s important for the team to understand their job roles and responsibilities and for managers to regularly reflect on them to ensure they relate to the core values of the business and its goals. In this article, each member outlines their experiences of working in a fast- paced bureau environment and how they work together to meet clients’ needs. What are your daily tasks? EW: My day starts by checking emails and opening our detailed, colour coded, spreadsheet which consists of all our payroll clients, split into weekly and monthly, organised by the date they wish to receive payroll correspondence. From here, I organise the workload by marking up jobs for our payroll junior to carry out. Either the payroll senior or I second check these before the payroll is finalised, checking them again after they have been finalised. My day then varies depending on the workload.
