ENGINE DIAGNOSTICS
EMISSIONS "Cat Food" Science: Diagnosing Catalytic Converter and Wide Band O2 Sensor DTCs 10/1/22, 8:30am - 11:30am Class #112, DeVos Gallery Overlook E Diagnosing catalytic converter and wide band HO2S DTCs can be challenging. Stay on top of P0420/P0430 and O2 sensor DTCs with tips on identifying the root cause of common “cat” (catalytic converter) failures including the improper A/F ratio (a.k.a. “cat food”). This course will help drivability technicians increase their diagnostic skills in the following areas: flow/low power (catalyst restrictions) and cat efficiency DTCs; conventional (switching) and wide band (lambda) O2 sensor testing; scan tool graphing and lab scope waveform analysis; using Mode $06 to verify effective repairs and minimize come backs; and much more!
Diagnosing Modern Valve Actuation Systems 10/1/22, 1:30pm - 4:30pm Class #217, DeVos Grand Gallery B The goal of this course is to prepare the aftermarket technician to be successful in troubleshooting faults with variable cam timing, variable cam lift, and variable displacement systems. Technicians will learn how to identify these systems, understand and test their operation, and accurately diagnose problems. Technicians will also learn how the MultiAir system works and how to troubleshoot faults. After completing this course, a technician will have the knowledge to: understand variable valve timing operation, identify the components and their functions, interpret cam position data in the data stream, diagnose MultiAir faults accurately, and much more!
Evaporative Emissions Diagnostics 10/1/22, 1:30pm - 4:30pm Class #210, DeVos Gallery Overlook C This course is designed to help technicians understand how to diagnose and repair today’s evaporative emission control systems. We will cover several types of enhanced evaporative emission systems with a focus placed on leak detection pumps and evaporative system integrity modules. We will also discuss operating strategies for engine off natural vacuum systems and natural vacuum leak detection systems. Leak testing procedures using smoke test equipment will be reviewed and discussed. Diagnostic methods for quickly pinpointing the cause of common EVAP DTCs will be highlighted.
Misfire Diagnostics 10/1/22, 1:30pm - 4:30pm Class #205, Amway Grand View
Diagnosing misfire complaints is a common job in the bays. In this course, we will discuss a practical and effective approach to misfire diagnostics. We'll discuss air fuel, ignition and mechanical misfire testing procedures and modern day “ghost misfires.” A strong emphasis will be placed upon scan data interpretation in order to determine what type of misfire will be diagnosed.

Broken Cars: Dealing with the Hard Jobs 10/1/22, 8:30am - 11:30am Class #108, DeVos Gallery Overlook A What does a technician deal with every day? Broken cars! This course will look at several unique and challenging vehicle repair problems using case studies. We will start with a post- collision repair, dealing with many new systems you may not be familiar with, and continue with a difficult 4WD diagnosis. A rough running complaint after engine service and a hot rod hesitation will finish the discussion. This presentation will help develop a logical plan to deal with a wide variety of common and not-so-common problems.

Engine Mechanical Diagnosis with Electronic Equipment 10/1/22, 1:30pm - 4:30pm Class #220, DeVos Grand Gallery E This course covers the use of current probes, vacuum and pressure transducers to quickly diagnose engine mechanical issues. When using the techniques discussed, the amount of physical tear down will not be required for diagnosis. This course will focus on misfire problems and address ignition and camshaft timing issues. Multiple tools will be covered to achieve these goals but technique is the key. All of the testing techniques will be backed up with actual “broken car” case studies. If you own a scope, the information discussed will greatly expedite your diagnostic process.
