ANNUAL REPORT 2021/22
that involved a hydrogen blending initiative with the National Gas Company of Trinidad & Tobago (NGC). Earth Shaking Research Few researchers can rival the work of regional seismologists for immediacy and impact. During the review period the Seismic Research Centre recorded 280 earthquakes above magnitude 3.8 with the largest magnitude 5.8 – occurring in the Paria Peninsula on 14 July 2022. There were 16 events in the range 5.0 – 5.9 and 149 events in the range 4.0 – 4.9. The energy liberated during the 12 months was smaller than previous years; however, this does not imply a change in the seismic hazard in the Eastern Caribbean. The volcanic complexes in St Vincent, Dominica and St Lucia recorded seismicity at a low level and other volcanoes in the Lesser Antilles arc remained at background levels. In January 2022, there was an increase in the level of volcanic unrest at the Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat. This indicated that, despite there being no lava extrusion from the volcano since February 2010, the magmatic system remains active and there remains a possibility for future surface activity.
