Interview

We met up with leading hairstylist Ricardo Rojas in NYC during Fashion Week and Met Gala to ask him all things haircare. We also wanted to know what prompted him to start his own haircare collection. Ricardo has worked with every celebrity on the planet from Eva Longoria, Katie Holmes, Adriana Lima to name but a few and has created his own signature collection of products, which are rich in amazing ingredients and make styling your hair eortless.

I’ve participated in numerous events all over the world from fashion shows in Milan, such as Versace, Dolce & Gabanna, and in Paris with Chanel, Dior, Karl Lagerfeld, Galiano, etc. I worked on photoshoots for numerous brands like CROME HEARTs, starring Cher at le baccarats Hotel. I’ve also worked weddings like Mariah Carey’s in the Island Maldives when she renewed her vows with Nick Cannon. But I’ve especially loved traveling with Donatella Versace around the world to personally work for her during her shows in Milan and all over the world. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIG EVENTS YOU HAVE STYLED YOUR A-LIST CLIENTS FOR? I get so excited for any project - I treat each project with the same passion as if it were my first time! DO YOU FIND JOY IN HAIR DRESSING? WE HEAR YOU ARE EXTREMELY PASSIONATE. Cher, Adrian Lima, Hillary Swank, Tommy and the Hilfiger’s! WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE CELEBRITY CLIENTS? I love to dance and act. I also enjoy working out and traveling the world and food. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR PERSONAL HOBBIES?

Born in Argentina, I started my hairdressing career at a very young age – 20, but before that, I had already found myself fascinated with Chiñons at the age of 4 and I used to play with my grandmother’s hair. At 8 years old I began cutting everyone’s hair in the family, from my siblings to my mom and eventually even my father although he didn’t want me to pursue hair styling. I never truly felt like hair was my ultimate passion – acting was! And dancing! While doing hair I would dance also focus on dancing but by the age of 20 I decided that I wanted to be the best stylist in my town and then someday the world! Crazily enough, I owned my first salon at 23 and at 27 I was flying to NYC to meet the legendary Oribe at the famous Elizabeth Arden salon. And that is how my career in the US started! WHAT IS THE ESSENCE BEHIND YOUR SIGNATURE HAIRCARE COLLECTION? HOW DID YOU START YOUR CAREER IN HAIR, AND DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO BE IN THE BEAUTY WORLD? It was important to me that this collection be connected to my Argentinean roots so the collection of shampoos, conditioners, treatment mask, and my “must have” styling products which are all uniquely infused with Yerba Maté extract. It has healing properties that nourish both inside and the outside of the body as well as boosts essential vitamins, minerals and amino acids that add vitality to the hair. For the packaging, I chose red to signify the regalia of Tango dancers!

CARROT OIL

When it comes to oils in the skincare world, we typically hear about coconut, jojoba, argan and avocado but we rarely hear about carrot oil, which is actually full of skin and hair benefits. MAKARI has been using carrot oil in two of our highly rated lines, the Naturalle Carotonic and the Extreme Argan and Carrot Oil. It’s time to shed some light on the benefits of carrot oil and why it should be part of your skincare routine!

FAQ

WHAT IS CARROT OIL?

HOW TO USE IT ON SKIN? Like other oils, you can apply a healthy amount to the designated area and gently rub into your skin in both the morning and night. Experts highly recommend combining the carrot oil with a carrier oil such as olive oil or hazelnut oil and what’s really nice about it is that it’s meant for all skin types! One thing to keep in mind is that carrot oil is only used in small percentages in beauty products due to the fact that too much can tint your skin. It’s not just a myth! If you do plan on using a higher percentage of carrot extract, experts suggest using that higher dosage only in the evening as the exposition of sunlight and heat, the Beta Carotene can begin to tint your skin as oxidation begins.

Carrot oil is simple. Made from the crushed roots of carrots immersed in an oil such as coconut or olive oil. Next up is the process of cold-pressing, which separates the natural oils and liquid from the fiber of the carrot – therefore you won’t find carrot chunks in your skincare products. With roots tracing back to France, Greece, India, and Egypt, having been used to aid with digestion and soothe inflammation. Something to keep in mind is that carrot oil is not the same thing as carrot seed oil – one comes from the plant itself while the other comes from the seeds. Both products contain vitamins but they’re incredibly dierent.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? Carrot oil is chock full of rich vitamins and antioxidants that provide several important benefits that will make you want to buy every carrot in a 5-mile radius! One of the most notable benefits of carrot oil is that it leaves your skin looking youthful, soft to the touch and calm! Vitamins A, B, C, D and E and Essential Fatty Acids BETA CAROTENE • Powerful antioxidant with anti-aging properties • Same compound that gives carrots that bright orange hue • Antioxidants repair cells and tissues in your body which have been damaged by free radicals • Cell regeneration occurs, meaning that healthier cells will rise to the service giving o a youthful glow Anti-inflammatory Properties Calm the Skin Ease forms of inflammation in your scalp as well (sunburn, dry skin, acne) Antibacterial Properties Help Combat Acne pimples and acne occur when pores become clogged with your skins natural oils, but carrot oil helps to pull out all that debris, leaving you wish cleaner and clearer skin.

(CONTINUED)

HOW TO USE CARROT OIL ON HAIR?

While the benefits of carrot oil on skin sound amazing already, it doesn’t stop there! Carrot oil can also be used in your hair care routine. In a sense, just as the oil keeps your skin looking young and healthy, it does the same for your hair! From hair growth and hydrating your hair and scalp to preventing hair loss and split ends, carrot oil will leave your hair silky smooth and moisturized. Recommended use is 1-2 times a week for those looking to strengthen, soften and protect their hair. Additionally, carrot oil is great for protecting hair from environmental pollution as well as eliminating any gross bacteria on the scalp that can cause dandru or prevent hair growth. While you can find carrot oil in lots of hair products, if you’re looking to treat your hair right, try applying carrot oil from your roots to the ends of your hair, massaging it into your scalp. Sleep with the oil in overnight and wash your hair out in the morning! It’s a great pre-shampoo treatment right at home!

IS CARROT OIL GOOD FOR HYPERPIGMENTATION? There are many essential and carrier oils that are highly recommended to treat hyperpigmentation and carrot oil is definitely one of them! As mentioned earlier, the high levels of the antioxidant Beta Carotene in the oil repair cells and tissues in our bodies that have been damaged by free radicals. Therefore, it removes the pigmentation and evens out your skin tone. While it is important to take care of your skin and treat hyperpigmentation, the 2 best ways to eliminate your chances of getting are by limiting your sun exposure and wearing sunscreen every day.

WHAT IS

We all have blemishes – beauty marks, moles, spots, etc. – they’re part of what make us who we are. But sometimes we get larger spots, patches even, of a darker tone. Those aren’t freckles or moles, it’s hyperpigmentation. Let’s break it down. Hyperpigmentation is the over production of brown pigment melanin in your skin, and while it’s important to be aware that it is usually harmless, it can come about for a number of reasons:

EXTREME ARGAN & CARROT OIL Illuminate skin's appearance with advanced skin-toning botanicals and vitamins for a head-to-toe, even-toned glow.

• Inflammation • Sun exposure • Melasma • Medical conditions or medication

ORDER

Inflammation can be set o by several things – from eczema, acne, bug bites, and even scrapes. But the inflammation truly begins when too much friction or pressure is applied, and the pigment-producing cells begin to overwork, and which eventually leads to a dark spot being left behind. Sun exposure is the most common way to develop hyperpigmentation. It’s as simple as spending too much time in the sun or not wearing sunscreen. The sun’s rays can do serious damage to your skin as it produces extra melanin to try to protect you from the UVA and UVB rays. And that, is how we tan. And while tanning may seem like a fun summer activity, there’s a fine line between laying out in the sun here and there with high levels of SPF lathered all over your body and using tanning oil to lay out in the sun for an excessive period of time. Therefore, sunscreen should always be an essential part of your skincare routine, even if you’re spending limited time outside. Melasma comes about for a completely dierent reason. Pregnancy. Bringing life into this world can lead to melasma, which is also referred to as ‘the mask of pregnancy’ since hyperpigmentation is known to appear on the face and body. Melasma can be triggered by sun exposure, genetics, and hormonal changes. Lastly, some medical conditions and medication can cause hyperpigmentation. Addison’s disease, an adrenal gland disorder can cause dark spots and certain drugs, including antibiotics, and chemotherapy can as well. Hyperpigmentation, no matter the cause, can make one feel insecure and we at Makari want to provide everyone with the chance to feel beautiful and like their best self. That’s why we take hyperpigmentation seriously. We have several products for tackling those spots, leaving you radiant!

MEET JANE This month, we’re starting our new monthly feature, the ambassador spotlight! Our first feature is on Jane Meadows, who has been with Makari since 2018! Living in Buckinghamshire, UK, Jane works as a skincare and minimalist fashion content creator as well as a YouTuber! But that’s not all, she’s also a digital business analyst in the tech world! We’ve asked Jane a few questions about herself, and we can’t wait for you to learn more about her!

WHEN WHEN DID YOU START USING MAKARI? I started using MAKARI in 2018. HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT MAKARI? From other people who have used and LOVED the products. DO YOU HAVE KIDS? I have 3 lovely teenage children. IF STRANDED ON A DESERTED ISLAND, WHAT 3 THINGS WOULD YOU TAKE WITH YOU? Sunscreen, Phone, and Apples.

1 FUN FACT ABOUT JANE I always look out for funny memes and videos. I love a good laugh! Lol!

WHAT’S YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE? At night, I always double cleanse, and I use Makari exfoliating soaps or the 24K gold soap which I find pleasantly moisturizing. I then moisturize with the 24K rose gold illuminating serum. It is one of my favorites! It hydrates my skin more than any other serums I’ve used before. In the morning, I use less skincare products. I cleanse (no double cleansing) then I tone and apply the Makari face sunscreen which is absolutely moisturizing.

AT WHAT AGE SHOULD START LOOKING AFTER THEIR SKIN?

I would genuinely say as early as possible. Teenagers should be taught basic skincare routine of cleanse, exfoliate, tone, moisturize and sunscreen. However, from 20s, one must start adding a bit of anti-aging products into their routine.

founder of The Rise of Broken Women

When trying to combat homelessness in our cities and towns, there is no one more qualified to spearhead the process than those who have experienced it firsthand. I am one such person, and this is the system I have created.

Over the past 2 months, we at MAKARI have had the absolute pleasure of getting to know Charlee Newman, the founder of The Rise of Broken Women, a nonprofit dedicated to helping women and their families leave the cycle of poverty. Charlee is incredibly kind and passionate about her work and the work that she does is essential.

My system is designed to aid and empower. It consists of three primary steps:

• Supply to survive • teach to create, • and finally, connect to re-erect

I am Charlee S. Newman, Founder, Creator, and Visionary of the Rise of Broken Women.

The initial stage of rebuilding the broken is ensuring their survival by utilizing financial and material donations to supply their everyday needs. Only when you aren’t worried about where your next meal or necessity will come from are you able to take the next steps in your journey.

It all started when I found myself living on the streets of New York City for three days. I Would stand in front of this Chinese Restaurant because the businesspeople would drop their doggy bags into the trashcan. I would collect what they discarded for lunch and dinner. Eventually registered myself at a drop-in center where I lived for two years. These were the worst days of my life. I felt afraid of my surroundings, I was in constant fear, totally humiliated, deeply ashamed, angry, hurt and very alone. When you’re unable to keep yourself clean on a consistent basis, this destroys confidence, self-esteem, and some of us give up on life. Not only keeping yourself clean but keeping your clothing clean as well. Most of had no change of underwear or wore no underwear. We lacked basics like socks, outerwear, and toiletries. The dream that God sent me after all I had been through was that I am alive because He was preparing me for this intended purpose, He intended for me to continue. This was so brilliantly portrayed as an artist painting a portrait with pain and a slight sigh of relief. The relief I would feel, would be the drastic steps I would have to take by creating what I captivated in the dream that I saw. I was to start this venture alone by sharing my journey where I’ve been and what I intend to do with the knowledge I’ve gained. Through care, hope and support I would try to reverse some of the pain, the separation from life, which leads to isolation, depression and segregation – all things that I had felt. After a while you become invisible. No one hears or sees you because they don’t want to be involved. I have seen how the system failed me and my fellow women. Now, I use my time to ensure that homeless and low-income women and their families get what they need to rise above their circumstances and live their best lives. Because I am the Rise of Broken Women.

The second stage the Rise of Broken Women focuses on is the education of homeless, impoverished, and at-risk women.

I started the Work Reacclimating Internship Program, a workshop for basic computer training. This sixteen-week program will help these women build in-demand skillsets that are necessary for the modern workplace and are attractive to potential employers. Through monetary aid from corporate and individual donors, we are able to provide essential training in a variety of fields, all necessary to the community. That makes these women feel relevant. It gives them confidence. It allows them to look to the final stage: connecting. The second half of our internship program is dedicated to helping the members of our program build their resumes, learn how to conduct themselves during interviews, and search for jobs. Using our network and the connections our interns have made for themselves, they are able to re-connect with the community and rebuild their lives. By using this structure, by giving these women and their families the chance they deserve, we can break the cycle of poverty while strengthening our communities and bringing the forgotten back into the fold.

in 2020, Authority Magazine Interviewed Afolami Oyenuga, our main distributor of Makari Products in Nigeria and the chairman of Kuddy Cosmetics International Limited. INCLUSIVITY As pioneers in inclusivity, it is exciting to see other large beauty brands increasingly catering to more underserved demographic categories whether that is people of color -like our brand Makari de Suisse-, grooming products, or gender-neutral beauty products. While there is still a lot of work to be done and there are many demographics that still seem to have been “forgotten” by the beauty industry, the progress made in the past years towards inclusive beauty is definitely remarkable. CAN YOU SHARE 3 THINGS THAT MOST EXCITE YOU ABOUT THE MODERN BEAUTY INDUSTRY? 1 CLEAN BEAUTY/CUSTOMER EDUCATION As our customers become more ingredient-savvy and the information about the best ingredients and formulations becomes readily available to everyone, beauty brands must quickly adapt to the new standards and pay more attention than ever to potentially harmful or unnecessary ingredients. 2 INFLUENCER ENGAGEMENT Our partnerships with macro and micro-influencers who genuinely love the brand and are willing to share useful tips and best practices with their followers is definitely a game-changer. Seeing the positive results that our products have had in their skin has been key to building the confidence level to purchase our brand for new consumers. This is why we only partner with influencers who regularly use Makari, while we want the exposure, we also want it to be as genuine as possible. These partnerships are key especially for smaller and indie brands who may not have the funds to launch massive marketing campaigns like the top beauty players. 3

Matt Evers is an American pair skater, model and actor. He is the 1998 U.S. Junior Pairs Figure Skating Champion, and has competed in every series of the UK hit ITV’s Dancing On Ice.

I started skating when my grandfather got me a pair of ice skates when I was 8 as my cousin and I used to sneak over to the neighbor’s pond and try and skate with our aunts and uncles skates in the winter… that Christmas we woke up to our own pair of skates and he had flooded one of the back pastures and made us our own ice rink. HOW’D YOU GET INTO ICE SKATING? 8 years old I started skating however I didn’t really start taking lessons till I was 9 and made my first national competition when I was 14 and then was 5th in the world by 18. AT WHAT AGE AND WHERE?

HOW DID YOU FIND YOURSELF ON DANCING ON ICE IN THE UK?

To be honest I don’t know how I got the job. I was working as an actor on General Hospital at the time and SAG went on strike the summer of 2005. Randomly I got a call from a producer in England asking me if I’d like to come to London and teach a celebrity how to skate and then perform with them on a new type of tv show. I had never been to the UK before and as I was out of work, I thought it would be something cool to do…. little did we know that show would be a smash hit and 15 series later I still love what I do.

WHO WAS YOUR FAVORITE SKATING PARTNER ON THE SHOW?

Apples to Oranges really… they are all unique in their own way however teaching Heather Mills-McCartney (Pauls ex-wife) who is an amputee how to skate was pretty incredible. Getting to teach Pamela Anderson and perform with her albeit a short stint on the show due to a trip and a wardrobe malfunction was pretty awesome. Living in Malibu and rubbing elbows with her über famous friends was definitely a highlight. Getting asked to be the first same sex partnership, I knew was going to be a huge responsibility not only personally, but for the LGBTQ+ community. I was so honored that the network asked me to take on a partnership like this. For the first time in decades I was actually quite nervous for how it was going to be perceived. I didn’t want anyone to feel like “gay” was being shoved in their face…. however, through my research I found that its very common in the ballroom world that same sex partners compete with each other. Training another man was just like training a woman and the performance side was exactly the same. Physically I didn’t find it dicult at all and I can say it’s one of my proudest moments of my career and life. We received messages from people all over the world saying thank you…. (Even got a beautiful DM from Michelle Visage) . ALONG WITH IAN “H” WATKINS, YOU WERE THE FIRST SAME-SEX COUPLE TO SKATE ON THE SHOW, WHAT WAS THAT LIKE?

I got in to video pretty much straight out of high school. I always had a little crappy video camera and would set up scenes or behind the scenes stu WAY BEFORE social media. After I quit competing and before I moved to Los Angeles I was a Production Assistant at the old ABC sports. I’ve always found television is a passion of mine and using my skating contacts got a job straight away out of the sport. This led to me learning the production industry and then into assistant directing and directing over the past 20 years. To date I think I’ve associate directed over 150 made for tv sports entertainment shows like Brian Boitano Ice specials or any of the holiday skating shows you might have seen previously. FROM BROADWAY, TO MODELING TO ICE SKATING YOU’VE LED MANY LIVES! BUT WHAT OUR READERS MIGHT NOT KNOW IS THAT YOU ARE THE BRAINS BEHIND OUR LATEST SHOOT! HOW DID YOU GET INTO VIDEOGRAPHY? Yes…video and storytelling through video is a passion of mine. We know longer use photo albums to look back at memorable times so I really try and create the best out of what is happening on a shoot if I’m shooting BTS. I also shoot and direct loads of actors, models, hosts and real estate. IS IT A SIDE PROJECT/PASSION OF YOURS?

I do actually…I look after about a dozen brands in the UK creating content for them. DO YOU DO IT IN THE UK AS WELL?

At the minute my goal is continue working both in the UK and the US. As much as I love London, California will always be my home though…. growing up in Minnesota and North Dakota I just have to be in the sun and near the beach. I typically spend about 6 months a year in the UK so I guess I have the best of both worlds. IN THE UK OR DO YOU HOPE TO MOVE BACK TO THE STATES IN THE FUTURE? YOU’VE LIVED ON BOTH THE EAST AND WEST COASTS AS WELL AS CURRENTLY LIVING IN THE UK – DO YOU PLAN TO STAY Oh, good question, I do get this quite a bit and I guess you can never really predict a trend as now how things go viral literally changes by the day and the platforms are constantly changing their analytics however I am getting a lot of info about Instagram is going to really be pumping a lot of attention in to video and not just the typical grid still shot. TikTok has really changed the face of social media. Facebook now even has a new content creators’ corner which is a fantastic tool to use if you need help and or wanting some tips. It definitely keeps me on my toes trying to keep up with the ever-changing face of social media. YOU ALSO HAVE A KNACK FOR SOCIAL MEDIA – WHAT ARE SOME STRONG TRENDS YOU SEE POPPING UP FOR FALL?
