WHAT IS

We all have blemishes – beauty marks, moles, spots, etc. – they’re part of what make us who we are. But sometimes we get larger spots, patches even, of a darker tone. Those aren’t freckles or moles, it’s hyperpigmentation. Let’s break it down. Hyperpigmentation is the over production of brown pigment melanin in your skin, and while it’s important to be aware that it is usually harmless, it can come about for a number of reasons:

Inflammation can be set o by several things – from eczema, acne, bug bites, and even scrapes. But the inflammation truly begins when too much friction or pressure is applied, and the pigment-producing cells begin to overwork, and which eventually leads to a dark spot being left behind. Sun exposure is the most common way to develop hyperpigmentation. It’s as simple as spending too much time in the sun or not wearing sunscreen. The sun’s rays can do serious damage to your skin as it produces extra melanin to try to protect you from the UVA and UVB rays. And that, is how we tan. And while tanning may seem like a fun summer activity, there’s a fine line between laying out in the sun here and there with high levels of SPF lathered all over your body and using tanning oil to lay out in the sun for an excessive period of time. Therefore, sunscreen should always be an essential part of your skincare routine, even if you’re spending limited time outside. Melasma comes about for a completely dierent reason. Pregnancy. Bringing life into this world can lead to melasma, which is also referred to as ‘the mask of pregnancy’ since hyperpigmentation is known to appear on the face and body. Melasma can be triggered by sun exposure, genetics, and hormonal changes. Lastly, some medical conditions and medication can cause hyperpigmentation. Addison’s disease, an adrenal gland disorder can cause dark spots and certain drugs, including antibiotics, and chemotherapy can as well. Hyperpigmentation, no matter the cause, can make one feel insecure and we at Makari want to provide everyone with the chance to feel beautiful and like their best self. That’s why we take hyperpigmentation seriously. We have several products for tackling those spots, leaving you radiant!
