Make Raking Easier in 3 Steps

3 WAYS TO MAKE RAKING EASIER

Wear the right clothes. Bugs, dirt, germs, and other gross organisms like to live in piles of leaves. So, as you rake, pile, bag, and discard your leaves, wear the proper equipment to protect yourself from illness or injury. Wear long sleeve shirts and full-length pants to protect your skin from irritants, and when possible, scoop up leaves with gloved hands. Eye protection can prevent a vision injury, and if you have asthma or another breathing condition, consider wearing a mask. With the right gear, you’ll tackle your yard in no time. Don’t wait. Perhaps the biggest mistake a homeowner can make is waiting until the first snowfall to rake up the leaves. You don’t want to rake when the trees in your yard are still full, but you also shouldn’t let a heavy leaf covering stay in your yard for too long. This environment is a welcome scenario for pests, and it can be unhealthy for your lawn. Find the sweet spot — 3–4 days of heavy leaf cover on your lawn — and get to work. You may have to do a light raking later in the fall, but your lawn and home will be healthier thanks to your early bird tendency.

October is a gorgeous month in Missouri! Our fall leaves reach their peak color around mid-October, but if you’re a homeowner, you know these leaves come with a caveat: Someone has to rake them up! Here are three tips to make it easier.

Don’t put your mower away.

That’s right. Why rake the leaves when you can simply turn them into mulch for your yard. You can do this by using a mulching lawn mower, which will allow you to trim your yard, provide nutrients to your grass ahead of the harsh winter, and cut down on the amount of time you spend doing yard work. However, as with grass, don’t mow over wet leaves. You can also collect the leaves in a mower bag and dispose of them

Bonus: Be sure to check with your municipality for leaf disposal requirements and recommendations!

per your municipality’s guidelines.
