“An idyllic and peaceful setting to reflect and remember”

2

Welcome to memorialisation at The Oaks The final resting place of a loved one is an extremely important and personal decision and careful consideration should be given to all options available. To help you with this we can hold ashes for up to three months without charge, allowing you time to consider how you wish to remember your loved one, and ultimately what is to be their final resting place. We have a number of tranquil memorial areas within the grounds, including landscaped memorial gardens, a woodland glade, memorial mounds, children’s memorial area and a traditional book of remembrance. This brochure will guide you through the range of options available, and once you feel ready, our experienced team will be available for a memorial consultation to show you around the grounds and to discuss your wishes, ensuring the memorial chosen is the right one for you. A dedicated area of our grounds has been set aside for scattering of ashes, but should you wish, you can also hold all or part of the ashes within any one of our unique memorials, alternative urns or special memorial jewellery. A remembrance memorial at The Oaks will provide a special place for family and friends to visit, reflect and remember when commemorating anniversaries, birthdays and other special times of the year. Sustainability at our heart

At The Oaks we are committed to developing and managing the crematorium in a responsible and sustainable manner, supporting Southern Co-op’s vision of working together to make a positive difference to the local economy, the environment and our communities across the South of England. The Oaks Crematorium has been built to the highest environmental standards, employing the latest techniques in cremation and clean air technology to prevent pollution to the air and surrounding environment. The low rise building has native oak cladded walls, with traditional local flint and brickwork and boasts a green sedum ‘living’ roof which provides additional habitat for wildlife.

Offering a space of remembrance

Surrounding and within the extensive grounds of the Crematorium is semi-ancient, semi-natural woodland, designated as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC). To the northeast of the site there is a shaded naturally draining pond which provides sanctuary for a locally very rare heathland species called Floating Clubrush (Eleogiton fluitans). This is only the fourth known location for this species in Southeast Hampshire. The clubrush forms roots on the pond bed when the pond is dry and when the pond naturally fills with rainwater, its roots detach and it ‘floats’ on the top of the water, re-attaching its roots when the pond naturally dries out again. In another area of the site an attenuation pond provides further wildlife habitat. The development of the site has involved converting poor quality agricultural land used for grazing, into various enriched habitats.

“My mums memorial orb sits beautifully within the backdrop of The Oaks, I find a quiet comfort every time I visit.”

Honouring memories in the heart of nature

The Oaks is surrounded by peaceful ancient woodland, a landscape that brings comfort and reflection to everyone who visits. Gentle pathways, quiet glades and the natural beauty of the trees create a meaningful place to remember those we love. Families often tell us that the calm of the woodland helps them feel connected, offering a sense of closeness that only nature can provide. Within this setting, we offer memorial options designed to sit harmoniously in the landscape. Each one is created to blend with the natural environment, allowing you to choose a tribute that feels personal and enduring. Woodland memorial orbs Crafted from sweet chestnut wood harvested from our own coppice woodland immediately next door to the crematorium. Each woodland orb is unique, providing an authentic natural memorial. As the orb becomes established within the woodland it will become home to mosses and insects, contributing to the wildlife and health of the woodland environment. The plaques are made in England using regionally sourced materials. A flower holder (also made of sweet chestnut) and vase can also be ordered for floral tributes, complementing the style and look of your chosen orb. Sweet chestnut is naturally very durable due to the high tannin levels in the heartwood which makes it resistant to decay. This inherent resistance means it will serve as an excellent choice as a natural memorial.

Modern options can include scattering a small portion into space or choosing a biodegradable urn for a gentle water ceremony. Each approach offers its own sense of meaning and comfort. What matters most is finding the setting that feels right for you and your family, creating a moment of remembrance that is both personal and lasting. Additional options Choosing a memorial is a meaningful way to honour a loved one, and many families find that having a dedicated place or item of remembrance can bring comfort during bereavement. Memorials offer a focal point to return to, helping individuals and families process grief at their own pace. Whether it is a plaque, or another memorial purchased from The Oaks, each option provides a gentle reminder of the connection that remains. These memorials can become part of a personal ritual, offering moments of reflection throughout the year. They also create a sense of continuity, allowing future generations to understand and appreciate the life being remembered. For many, having something tangible to visit or hold brings stability during a time of change, supporting emotional healing while preserving precious memories.

Choosing the right place for a memorial

Selecting where to place a memorial at The Oaks is a personal decision, and taking a moment to reflect on what feels right can bring real comfort. Our grounds offer a variety of peaceful settings, each with its own character. You may prefer a spot beside the wildflower meadow, where the colours change with the seasons and the landscape feels open and full of light. Others are drawn to the woodland, surrounded by established trees and birdsong, offering a sense of calm and continuity. It can also help to think about the type of memorial that best reflects your wishes. Stone provides strength and longevity, creating a lasting tribute that settles naturally into the environment over time. Wood offers a softer, more organic feel, ideal for those who want something that blends gently into the landscape. Whatever you choose, our team at The Oaks can guide you through the options so your memorial sits in a place that feels meaningful, peaceful and true to the person you are remembering.
