What lesson is there for us in the fact that the Lord thanked the Fa ther for the little that He was to make enough? Golden Text Illustration Frederick the Great, who first made Prussia a great power, ;had once been saved from peril by one o f his father’s grenadiers. ■ . After he himself came to the throne, it happened that one of his regiments showed signs of mutiny. Frederick was resolved that an example should be made, and one entire company o f the mutinous regiment was ordered out for execution. The son o f the grenadier who had saved the life o f Frederick was an officer in the guilty regiment and was selected by his. company to make petition before the king. He went and pleaded with all his heart, putting the case in the best light he could and showing the king how many of the innocent he must slay with the guilty, but the king was inexorable. They must die. “Will you refuse this request to my fa ther’s son?” said the officer. “Whose son are you?” asked the king. “The son o f the grenadier who saved Your Majesty’s life.” “I will pardon the rebels,” said the king, “not for their guilty sakes, but because you are the son of the man who saved my life.” ; What man is there of us who dares pe tition God without the argument of the “Only Name” ? IV. S atisfying th e M ultitude (40-44). When all the supplies at the command o f the disciples were laid at the feet of the Lord, and when His word was obeyed, those supplies were found to be more than ample to meet all the need. He would have all things done in order, hence the multi tude were seated in ranks and rows of hundreds and fifties. When the disciples’ scanty provisions were given to the Lord, He turned to heaven and acknowledged that everything came from the beneficent hand of God. The five loaves and two fishes were gifts from God in the first place; without Him there would not have been even this small supply. His grace was acknowledged with thanksgiving, without any complaint that the supply was small. Here is something for all people to remember, that what ever the amount may be, whether large or small, it comes from the gracious hand of God, and when used according to His mind, it will be found to be enough and more than enough for every need. The Lord then gave the pieces of loaves and fishes to the disciples, and they to the waiting thousands, and “they did all eat, and were filled.” W e are so intent on hold ing what we think will be enough for our selves, and giving only what is left over, that many pressing needs today are not being met. Institutions which should be cared for are suffering because of the hesitancy o f God’s people to part with their “five loaves and two fishes.” The Bible Institutes, the missions, the semi naries, and the schools which are set for the defense and propagation of the' truth and are proven bulwarks o f the faith are languishing because the “ five loaves and two fishes” are withheld. Little wonder, then, that the supply is proving insufficient even to meet the need of those who hold it ! The Lord has given enough to His people to maintain all necessary agencies, if only the Lord’s people would hear His voice saying, “Give ye them to eat.” It may be that in these strenuous days, when the work o f the Lord is endangered, and when modernism rises higher and •.higher, the Lord is waiting, for His people to release what they have, in a new, more sacrificial way, before showing Himself to be the One who multiplies and increases the all that is placed at His disposal. The Lord’s care for the avoidance of waste is seen here. He commanded that the fragments be gathered up. Here He teaches a needed lesson in economy to those agencies which He has established. Finally, the miracle is emphasized by the record o f the number who ate o f the multiplied loaves and fishes. There were about five thousand men. It is wholly un necessary to pare down the miraculous character of this event; the Almighty God was present and at work. Lesson Questions Vs. 30-33. Jesus felt sorry: for them. He said, “They are like sheep without a shepherd.” Instead of resting quietly with His disci ples, He “began to teach them many things.” All day they stayed and listened to Him.
