“I am afraid I was not,” she admitted. “ Then God has not failed you, but you have failed God,” said Dr. Torrey. So completely did the cloud over her life roll away, that when the evangelist said, “Let us pray,” she was ready to kneel with him and take the whole matter to the Lord. The great lesson o f life is to be subdued before God. —J ohn M ac B eath . I love Thy will, O God, Thy blessed, perfect will, In which this once rebellious heart Lies satisfied and still. I love Thy will, O God, The sunshine and the rain; Some days are bring with praise, and some Sweet with accepted, pain. —E lizabeth C heney . MARCH 6 "I will come to you” (John 14:18). I think we can understand how the In carnation was something new and different in the relationship of God and man if we think about our own relations to our friends. My absent friend Comes to me every day in very true and important senses.. The works that he has done are all about me. That is one coming. And every day when the door opens and some mutual friend comes in, some one who knows him and loves him and has caught his character, it is as if my absent friend himself stepped across the threshold. That is another coming. And yet again, when I look into my own heart and find my friend there, when he speaks to me out o f my own self filled with him by love, there is an other coming. But with all these, still he is dim to me ; I cannot feel him, I cannot find him. But some day, as I sit there try

ing to apprehend him, the door opens and he himself comes in. There he is himself; now he has really come. —P hillips B rooks . Coming to us daily in a thousand blessed ways, the Lord Jesus keeps ever warm in the hearts of His children the love that He Himself has implanted there; but one day we shall see Him face to face, and our waiting hearts shall be fully satisfied. —S elected . MARCH 7 “And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him” (1 Sam. 16:23). , Self-will was the .secret explanation of all Saul’s' inward and outward miseries, of all the still heavier distress that over took him later on. Poor man—and yet he began so well 1 Secret sin,’ that was the ex planation. You know, and I know, that God wants the best for us. What, then, is the use of going about moping and sigh ing, cross with ourselves and as cross as two sticks with every one else ? You know what the matter is, you are cherishing some secret sin. The Spirit of God has laid Saul bare to the very backbone, and we know what was his disease. The Lord is always trying to lay us bare to ourselves. —J ohn M c N eill . MARCH 8 “ y e shine as lights in the world” (Phil. 2:15). : It takes more.strength to shine than it does to sound. That is what an amateur electrician found out some time ago. An exchange says that he rigged up an electric
