light for.his room and found after a little that it flickered and faded. A friend ex amined his plan and told him that it would never again run a light, but it might run a call bell. He declared that the battery was not strong enough to make a light, but was still able to make a noise. And that is what is the matter with some o f our church members. They are not strong enough spiritually to make a light, but they are strong enough other wise to make a noise! And the noise they make is so disquieting that they actually disturb the peace of Zion. Shine, but be silent!—H ight C. M oore . MARCH 9 “In the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee” (Psa. 5:3). The morning is the gate of the day, and should be well guarded with prayer. It is .one of the threads on which the day’s actions are strung, and should be well knotted with devotion. If we felt more the majesty of life, we should be more careful o f its mornings. He who rushes from his' bed to business, and waiteth not to worship, is foolish, as though he had not put on his clothes nor cleansed his face; and as unwise as though he dashed into the battle without arms or armor. It is ours to bathe in the softly flowing river •of communion with God before the heat of the wilderness and the1burden o f the day begin to oppress us. —C harles H addon S purgeon . Have a little talk with Jesus, Bring to Him each doubt and fear; Seek His guidance every moment, He will fill your heart with cheer. “H e that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much" (Lk. 16:10). It is not so much by sins that imperil their eternal safety that Christian people are unfitted for the highest forms of Christian service, but by failure to walk “step by step by the Spirit” in the min utiae of the daily life. Making a high pro fession, let us not fail to have a corres ponding high standard of exactitude in all things, especially in matters generally regarded as trifling and unimportant. The holiness required by God and man is one that cannot be too practical; . . . the holi ness He commands is not a dreamy, senti mental thing, something for song and speech only, but a blessed reality, some thing which ennobles and sanctifies the meanest and most trivial duties of daily life. —J. G regory M antle . MARCH 11 “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne o f grace" (Heb. 4:18). I believe there is nothing God loves more to see in His children than boldness in claiming the promises. “The throne of grace”—the phrase is very encouraging. It indicates power; it indicates a never-failing supply. It was not so until the cross had been erected, its shame and agony endured, and the sacrifice accepted. Then the bar rier was removed, and the access to the throne of the King opened up. Now we may come boldly—not as aliens, but chil dren. There is no freedom like this, no privilege known to man like it. It is the privilege o f the peers and the privy coun sellors of the kingdom to seek and obtain access to the Sovereign at all times. All the children o f God have access to Him at all times. It has been truly said, “When —S unday S chool T imes . MARCH 10
Christ passed into the heavens, He left the door open!”—H enry B owker . MARCH 12 “Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of. the fow ler" (Psa. 91:3). It is no small humiliation to remember how often our own hands have had to do with the weaving of these nets. Very often our past has been busy .preparing them for the present. . . . . Near the net, though out of sight, there stands the fowler. The great organizer of the forces of evil is there, the personal enemy ever on the watch to spread his snare for the Soul. He knows ail too well how to throw the net all full upon the path, yet not in the sight o f the bird. Now, what shall we do with these things? No Scripture tells the Christian to be reckless, or to be unprac tical in dealing with temptation, or to ex pect the Lord to do for us what we really can do for ourselves. Temptation goes, in its essence, as deep as the very springs of the w ill; deliverance, to be deliverance in deed, must go as deep. What we seek is nothing less than the psalmist’s expecta tion: to have our “ feet plucked out o f the net” ; to walk at liberty, keeping the King’s . commandments. . . . You need not lie help less in the tangles of the net. You may be truly, and entirely, and promptly free. — H andley C. G. M oule . MARCH 13 “ The Spirit o f God came upon Gideon" (Judg. 6:34). The Hebrew word literally means that the Spirit clothed Himself with him—not that the Spirit fell upon him as an anoint ing, but the Spirit took hold of him, passed into him, and made him the instru ment through which He accomplished His work. The thought conveyed to the He brew reader is that the Spirit clothed Him self with Gideon. Here is a revelation of one of the methods under that dispensation. For the doing of a special work, for the delivery o f a special message, for the an nouncement of the immediate purpose of God, the Spirit clothed Himself with a man, and the divine energy moved out in speech and action.—S elected . The Holy Spirit “clothed” Himself, It makes the record say, With Gideon! So he became As nothing in the fray, But just a suit of working clothes The Spirit wore that day! —S unday S chool T imes . “Be clothed with humility” (1 Pet. 5:5). MARCH 14 "Y e know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink o f the cup that I shall drink of and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" (Matt. 20:22). They had not known what they asked, but, surely had they known, they would still have asked and dared to-take. They said, “We are able,” and though they did not understand Him, they spoke truly ac cording to their own understanding. It is the men who say, “We can,” who do. They attain their end, though perhaps by as un expected a path as James and John, one of whom went to his seat in the kingdom by swift martyrdom,, and the other through the martyrdom o f a long life.
