Puncture: Getting to the Point

KNOW YOUR PUNCTURE THREATS Did you know there are two different tests for puncture resistance? It’s true, one for sharp objects and one for fine-pointed objects, such as hypodermic needles. As hand protection is designed for specific tasks, gloves that perform well under one type of puncture test may not necessarily perform well under the other and may not offer the protection that you need. It's important to understand the risks you face and choose your gloves accordingly.

Both gloves offer ANSI Puncture Level 5 protection but vary drastically in their intended uses. The Dexterity ® 10-Gauge Cotton/Poly Knit Gloves with Hi-Viz Latex Palm Lined with Punkban ™ offer protection from fine-pointed puncture hazards such as hypodermic needles while the TenActiv ™ Composite Knit Cut-Resistant Gloves with Polyurethane Palms protect against sharp object puncture threats such as sheet metal and glass shards.

SHARP OBJECTS Tested under the EN 388 standard, a puncture-resistance level of 1 through 5 is awarded by measuring the puncture force required to penetrate (from less than 10 Newtons to over 150 Newtons).

FINE-POINTED OBJECTS Tested under the ANSI/ISEA 105 standard using test method ASTM F2878-10, a puncture-resistance level of 1 through 5 is awarded by measuring the puncture force required to penetrate (from less than 2 Newtons to over 10 Newtons).
