Character Analysis: Ariel from The Tempest Ariel was a female ghostly spirit with minuscule, beady black eyes. You couldn’t miss the sky ‐ blue, long fl ames above her head and the swooshing as she fl ew over the rocky landscapes with her long, feather ‐ like wings. Ariel, with all her mys ti cal powers, can magically turn invisible and create noises to make people scared when she’s invisible. With the magni fi cent powers she has, she can make anything happen. Ariel is a brave spirit who is also very mighty and powerful. She would do whatever you told her to do. She is so kind to others she even helped Prospero to forgive everybody. The main thing that Ariel wants to do is just be let free by Prospero and have the island back to herself again. Unlike any other spirit, she has been isolated in a tree by Sycorax for 12 whole years. Then, when Prospero came to this island and set her free, she became Prospero’s servant but she wants to be set free from Prospero. Prospero is very mean to Ariel because he has called her a malignant slave. The main role that Ariel played within the ac ti on was she helped Prospero to realise that he was being sel fi sh and foolish, and that he needs to forgive everyone, give them their boat back, and let them travel back to Naples. Ariel also always wanted to be set free like other spirits and she does various tasks that Prospero asks her to do. For example, Ariel caused the storm with all of her powers. Ariel asks Prospero to set her free but he always says no and gets really angry at Ariel, but Prospero made a promise that in 12 years he will free Ariel. “Soon Ariel, very soon,” he said. Then one day Ariel asks Prospero and he fi nally says yes! The change in Ariel’s character throughout the story was important because at the start Ariel was in a tree for 12 years and then Prospero freed Ariel when Prospero and Miranda came to the island. But he made a promise that Ariel had to work for him for 12 years, then he would let her free, and Ariel was quite cross because she did nothing for herself for 24 years!! Then she got quite brave with Prospero and asked if she could leave. Later on in the story she gets even braver and helps Prospero to forgive all of the passengers on the ship and gives him some advice. By the end of the story Ariel is set free by Prospero and they leave on a ship, and Caliban and Ariel live on the island forever.
