Chapter 6

Discuss the Possible Outcomes of Driving Impaired

LEGAL & FINANCIAL HARM • Being charged with purchasing, having, or drinking alcohol underage, or driving under the influence • Expenses (court fines, lawyer fees, car insurance rate increases) • Reduced college options, due to admission policies; suspension from sports or clubs • Alcohol citation may stay on legal record, depending on local regulations • License could be revoked or possible jail time

PHYSICAL HARM • Damage to car or other’s car • Damage to property or other’s property • Personal injury—from minor to life-altering— and/or injuring others • Death—of you, someone you love or another person on the road

Riding with an Impaired Driver When talking about impaired driving, remember to:

Discuss the dangers of impaired driving, for drivers AND passengers.

Teach them how to identify signs of impairment.

Encourage alternatives: like calling a trusted adult for a ride.

Remind them there are no shortcuts to sobering up.

Stress that they need to call 911 in an emergency.

Research shows: even kids that don’t intend to ride with a driver who has been drinking or using substances may be “willing” in some circumstances. For example, they might be willing to get in the car if they feel responsible for helping a friend stay out of trouble or not get hurt. Someday your child may be faced with this decision and it’s important to set clear family rules.
