Alexandrine’s pathway to independence

Before finding a home with Housing Choices Australia, Alexandrine was living with her elderly parents.

“Alexandrine has taken some time to feel safe and comfortable in her own home as this stems from the loss of both her parents and there was a period of time to adjust and allow for mourning,” Mary said. “Alexandrine was provided with a lot of support from sta and family with lots of patience, understanding, encouragement and communication and time to heal.” Now settled, Alexandrine is loving her newly found independence. She’s learnt how to do her own cleaning and washing, how to prepare a grocery list and shop with support. “Alexandrine is more confident and understands how to use assistive technology. This has meant Alexandrine is a lot happier and feeling safe and comfortable in her own home.”

Limited housing options for individuals with disability who wanted to live with only one other person made it dicult for her to find a home that would improve her quality of life and independence. Alexandrine’s Housing Coordinator approached Housing Choices Specialist Housing Group (SHG) who met with the 40 year old, her parents, and disability support services Housing Transition Coordinator, to explore options. SHG Participant Engagement Manager, Laverne Mina, said they all worked together to find Alexandrine a place where she could live independently with the appropriate supports to enjoy her life. A brand new, three-bedroom townhouse in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs with a large kitchen living area, courtyard and proximity to public transport, shops and her day program, proved to be a great fit. “This opportunity was an ideal one for Alexandrine to only live with one other person while still providing her with the appropriate accessibility, which is about more than just the fabric of people’s homes. “This home allows Alexandrine to have her space and furnish it the way she would like with access to her supports.” While the move oered Alexandrine more freedom the thought of leaving her family home was causing her some anxiety said her Housing Transition Coordinator, Mary Rekaris of Annecto. In addition, Alexandrine was experiencing deep grief due to the loss of both her parents.

“Happy with my home, happy with myself.”

Alexandrine told Housing Choices that she enjoyed coming back to her new home each day:

“Come home listen to some music and telly … Cooking my own food … I love my food, making my own food.”
