WHO IS INA?

International Needs Australia (INA) is an agile next-generation global social impact organisation that supports local partners to help women and children be who they can be. We have been supporting rural women and children, single women, unemployed women, lower caste women and children, women and children with disabilities, and geographically isolated women and children to give them a bright future. We seek a future where every woman and child is given an equal opportunity to thrive, reach their full potential and be treated with dignity and respect. We work tirelessly towards this goal as our moral obligation and duty as global citizens.

MISSION OF SOCIAL ENTERPRISE PROGRAM

INA Social Enterprise Program is a non-profit program. The mission of this Social Enterprise Program is to empower marginalised communities and individuals by fostering sustainable economic development through social enterprise. We aim to create a positive and lasting impact on livelihoods, reduce dependency on external funding, and promote financial independence. INA recognises that social enterprise is a powerful tool for uplifting communities in a sustainable way. By harnessing the lessons from our previous successful pilot projects, we are committed to expanding our social enterprise model to achieve even greater heights of impact.

IMPACT OF SOCIAL ENTERPRISE PROGRAM

Since 2015, INA has actively supported 18 social enterprise projects, benefiting 132 families and over 700 direct beneficiaries. Our investments have totalled about $300,000 in loans and grants, resulting in improved livelihoods and economic stability for the communities we serve. INA has been exploring how social enterprise can complement our development initiatives to generate new prospects of income generating activities and empower both individuals and communities.

PROFILES OF THE BORROWERS

The individuals we support in this program are primarily marginalised individuals who have undergone training in vocational skills and basic financial literacy and business management through INA's livelihood projects. Most of them are females aged between 20 and 40, representing a diverse group of entrepreneurs. These individuals often face significant challenges when seeking traditional bank loans, as they lack the necessary collateral and robust credit histories required by financial institutions. In some cases, they are burdened with document requirements they cannot fulfill. Some of the individuals in the past use dot resort to high-interest loans from informal sources that led to financial instability and risks. It is for this reason that the INA’s social enterprise fund is introduced to provide critical support and empowerment to this underserved demographic.

GIVING OPTIONS

You can choose to support group borrowers or individual borrowers.

Group borrowers: Group borrowers include Farmer Associations, Cooperatives, and Self-Help Groups, typically comprising about 15 members, with a fund size of around $3,000. The group borrowers usually use the fund to purchase a mill and a tractor. Individual borrowers: Individual borrowers set up ventures such as grocery shops, tailoring shops, hair salons, and farming improvements, with a fund size of approximately $500.

THE ADMINISTRATIVE COST AND RETURN OF YOUR GIVING

INA offers a unique opportunity to you to make a significant impact while also receiving part of your giving back that you can continue to give to those that need your help more. This investment model ensures a win-win situation, where the borrowers receive the crucial startup capital they need, and you have the opportunity to recycle your funds to support more individuals in need. The INA Social Enterprise Program is non-profit program. You will get back 60% of the capital that you give to the borrowers in the space of 3 years. What that means is when you give $1,000 in our social enterprise projects, we commit to returning $600 of your giving to you over three years, and your $400 will be used to fund the program. We allocate a portion of the funds to administer the projects through our dedicated local partners in respective countries. Additionally, we do not charge interest rates to investees, aiming to prevent them from falling into debt traps.

Here is the break-down of your giving based on $1,000 for illustration.

HOW YOU CAN GIVE AND WHEN YOU CAN GET THE FUND BACK

You can contribute your funds to INA through our website www.ina.org.au . Once your contribution is received and invested, we will promptly notify you of its allocation to support a specific social enterprise project. This date marks the commencement of your investment, and you can anticipate the return of 60% of your initial capital after a three-year period. In exceptional cases where unforeseen circumstances affect the project beyond our control, and the anticipated return cannot be met, INA will notify you promptly. We will then work collaboratively to address the situation, seeking your understanding and cooperation.

KEEPING YOU INFORMED

INA is committed to keeping you informed about the impact of your contribution.

You will receive updates through the annual report of the social enterprise project your funds are directed towards. This report will provide transparency and insight into the progress and achievements made, ensuring you stay connected with the positive changes your support is driving.

SUCCESSFUL PROJECTS

India

This loan initiative in India is dedicated to empowering marginalized individuals, including those who are underprivileged, disabled, or residing in rural areas, by providing support for launching small businesses and offering essential skills training.

Our approach with the partner in India involves funding a significant portion, 80%, of the startup capital needed for these businesses, while the remaining 20% is contributed by the beneficiaries themselves. In most cases, the maximum seed money allocated to an individual or family is Rs. 10,000 (AUD185). With this vital seed money, our beneficiaries have embarked on various entrepreneurial journeys, establishing grocery stores, tiffin outlets, poultry farms, goat rearing enterprises, and tailoring businesses. This seed money serves as a lifeline, enabling beneficiaries to initiate a new and hopeful chapter in their lives. Without this opportunity, many would continue to face a future devoid of prospects. From August 2021 to September 2023, we are proud to have assisted 107 families in starting new businesses in the Jambulingapuram panchayat of Tamil Nadu, India. To be eligible for this seed money, recipients must have a monthly income below Rs. 5,000 (AUD 90), and they may be widowed or disabled individuals whose income also falls below this threshold. Moreover, participants are required to display a willingness to acquire necessary skills and familiarize themselves with basic financial literacy programs offered by DAIA, our valued partner.

SUCCESSFUL PROJECTS

One remarkable beneficiary of our program is Mr. Perummal Raj, a 26-year- old man born with a hearing impairment into an economically disadvantaged family in the rural village of Pudupatcheri. Despite his challenges, he completed his twelfth-grade education at a nearby school. Unfortunately, he struggled to secure employment due to his impairment and relied on a government disability pension of Rs. 1,500 (AUD28) per month, supplemented by sporadic daily labor. His income remained well below the poverty line. However, thanks to the awareness and opportunities provided through our program, Perummal Raj made a courageous decision to delve into goat rearing. We extended our support to help him acquire his initial two goats, and today, he proudly tends to a pen housing seven goats, each valued at Rs. 8,000. His determination knows no bounds as he strives to expand his flock and generate profits through their sale.

Perummal Raj's inspiring journey serves as a testament to the transformative impact of our social enterprise support initiative, offering individuals like him the chance to break free from the cycle of poverty and pursue their entrepreneurial dreams with newfound hope and determination.

SUCCESSFUL PROJECTS

Uganda

At Project Sustainable Livelihood for Farmers (SLF), we've been making a meaningful difference by providing loans to Farmers' Associations (FAs) for their agribusiness projects. This project builds upon the success of the previous two phases from 2014 to 2021. Since 2014, we have supported over 50 FAs with more than 1000 farmers. The project trains farmers on not just farming techniques but also how to write business proposals and how to manage their businesses.

Here's a story that showcases the positive change of our loan initiatives in the Project SLF for one of the FAs.

The Katikayonyi FA had a vision to construct a maize storage facility. This allowed them to sell their maize in bulk, negotiate better prices, and store produce for off-season sales. With 7 members (3 women and 4 men), Katikayonyi FA received a loan of UGX 5 million (AUD2,300) in April 2023. Between August and October 2023, they stocked 13.5 tons of maize, valued at UGX 13.5 million. By selling collectively, they achieved prices 2.5 times higher than selling individually. The FA is also on track with the loan payment at the 2% interest rate.

SUCCESSFUL PROJECTS

Myanmar

Meet Saw Bosco and Saw Kyaw Thu Win, two enterprising members of our project, who embarked on a journey to transform their lives with a small business loan of 500,000 kyats (equivalent to AUD 400) from our project on May 15, 2023. Their venture? Trading in bamboo shoots. The loan period spanned from July 2023 to the end of September 2023, with a repayment of 500,000 kyats to the group and a 1% interest contribution to the child group fund. Saw Bosco, residing with his family of five, and Saw Kyaw Thu Win, with a household of four, are not only project participants but proud parents of children actively engaged in project activities. After three months of dedicated effort in their bamboo shoots business, they achieved a remarkable profit of 315,000 kyats.

Their dedication and hard work paid off as they successfully repaid the loan to our project, setting a shining example for others to follow.

Following their success, the loan was passed on to Naw Thein Paw and Naw Win Kyi, who embraced the opportunity to launch their cardamom trading venture. They are now fully engaged in their business, eliminating the need to seek employment elsewhere. Their proximity to family offers the invaluable advantage of staying closely connected, both emotionally and practically.
