The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) has its new budget ready for the next school term. Trustees for the UCDSB approved the 2025-2026 budget during their final session, June 18, before the summer break. Jeremy Hobbs, UCDSB chief business officer and treasurer, presented the draft budget for final review and approval. The $470.4 million budget represents an inc- rease of $23.4 million in revenue for the UCDSB compared to the 2024-2025 budget. Revenue for the UCDSB includes both school taxes collected from municipalities that have Upper Canada schools within their areas, and also provincial school support funding and other sources of revenue used for day- to-day operations and planned capital works projects. Hobbs told the board that the proposed budget “enables the UCDSB to maintain high-quality instruction for students, invest in facility improvements, and develop strategies to manage long-term financial risks.” The exact figures for the 2025-2026 budget are $477,981,764 for operating expenses and $71,852,545 for next term’s capital works projects. Those figures do not include any possible future money that may become available through new support programs for education from the province or from other sources. At present, Hobbs’ department projects a possible $400,000 year-end surplus from the budget, assuming no extra expenses occur for the UCDSB. Budget highlights The proposed budget maintains all tea- ching programs that were part of the previous budget and also includes funding to deal with priorities listed in the UCDSB Director’s 8PSL1MBOGPSUIFUFSN Some of the significant items in the budget include $67.2 million for special education support services, an 8.3-per-cent
increase over the amount allocated in the previous budget; $71.9 million for capital projects; $3.6 million for Indigenous edu- cation support services, and a $1.4 million increase in the funding allocation for schools to support general school operations and also support staff replacement costs. cadre d’un projet commun avec trois autres artistes à la Salle du Parc Evergreen. Mme Simard participe actuellement au projet Art dans les bibliothèques du Comité de la bibliothèque Alfred-Plantagenet, plu- sieurs de ses œuvres étant exposées à la bibliothèque publique d’Alfred. La plupart des commentaires qu’elle a reçus sur son art louent son sens du réalisme, qu’il s’agisse de la faune ou des paysages naturels. Le réalisme est impor- tant pour Mme Simard, qui déclare ne pas aimer « l’exagération ou les impressions vagues » pour créer un effet lorsqu’elle peint ses observations de la nature. « Je me sens libre quand je peins, dit-elle. Quand on peint, on est dans son propre monde, on oublie tout ce qui nous entoure. » Simard sourit lorsqu’elle fait remarquer qu’elle ne se limite pas à la toile ordinaire pour certaines de ses œuvres. Une vieille paire de bottes de travail de son mari, mise au rebut, est devenue la « toile » d’un hom- mage floral unique à sa vision de la nature. De vieux bidons de lait et des poêles ont également trouvé une nouvelle vie en tant qu’œuvres d’art grâce à ses expériences créatives. Elle amuse également ses petits-enfants avec de petits portraits de personnages de dessins animés populaires. « C’est ma passion, dit-elle à propos de son art. J’adore ça. » Elle donne des conseils similaires à ceux qui envisagent de prendre un crayon, un stylo ou un pinceau. « Peignez selon ce que vous ressentez », dit-elle.
La nature inspire les visions artistiques de Monique Simard. L’artiste originaire d’Alfred a commencé à dessiner et à peindre dès son enfance, alors qu’elle grandissait dans la ferme familiale. « Je dessinais un peu à l’époque et j’aimais beaucoup ça, raconte Mme Simard. J’adorais les animaux et la nature, j’aimais être proche de la nature. J’avais un jardin où je pouvais travailler et j’adorais me promener. » Pendant ses promenades, elle rentrait parfois à la maison et dessinait ce qu’elle avait vu. Mais, comme elle le fait remarquer en souriant, c’était lorsqu’elle avait un peu de temps libre, lorsqu’elle n’était pas occu- pée par ses tâches ménagères, l’école ou toutes les autres activités qui occupent un enfant qui grandit. Aujourd’hui, à 77 ans et à la retraite, Mme Simard peut consacrer plus de temps au dessin et à la peinture. Avant de prendre sa retraite, elle occupait un poste de secrétaire à Ottawa, au ministère de l’Agriculture, puis plus près de chez elle, à l’Alfred College, avant sa fermeture. À la fin des années 1990, elle a délaissé le dessin pour se consacrer à la peinture, étudiant auprès de l’artiste professionnelle Linda Paquette, puis auprès de Nicole Vézeau. Elle a exposé ses œuvres à la gale- rie Eugène Racette à Orléans, à la Maison de l’Île à Hawkesbury, ainsi que dans le

MME DIANE GÉNIER née Bouvier
À la douce mémoire de Diane Génier née Bouvier, de Clarence-Rockland ON (originairement de Cochrane ON), décédée le 23 juillet 2025, à l’âge de 69 ans. Elle laisse dans le deuil son époux Pierre Génier; ses enfants Martin (Lucie Daoust) et Brigitte (Patrick St-Jean); et ses petits-enfants Tristan et Sara-Ève Génier et Mya St-Jean. Chère sœur de Rita (Donald Lamarche), Jaqueline (feu Gilles Girard), Élizabeth (Daniel Levasseur) et de feu Terensien Bouvier (Anita Lalonde). Elle laisse également ses neveux et nièces, et autres parents et amis. Diane manquera aussi beaucoup à la famille de Pierre, soit Lorenzo (feu Olivette Vaillancourt), Michelle (Alan Jardin), Roger Dowdall (feu Robert Génier) et Daniel (Laurie Kerr), en plus de plusieurs neveux, nièces, parents et amis de la famille Génier. Diane fut prédécédée par ses parents, Henri Bouvier et Germaine Girard. La famille désire remercier le personnel de la Résidence Champlain à L’Orignal, pour les très bons soins prodigués. Des dons à la Société Alzheimer de l’Ontario, ( alzheimer.ca/on/fr?form=Ontario_donate ) peuvent être faits en mémoire de Mme Génier. Les funérailles auront lieu le mercredi 13 août 2025, à 11 h, en la chapelle de la maison funéraire. La famille vous accueillera mercredi avant la célébration, dès 9 h.
