VANKLEEK HILL | In 2010, a grass-roots lit- eracy ca m paign called “A Book on Every Bed” was launched in Ithaca, New York. Working with a s m all literac y non-profit organization, A my Dickinson, a newspaper colu m nist, hatched a si m ple plan with a far- flung goal: to foster a generation of readers. The idea was to put a m illion books at the foot of a m illion beds for a m illion children on Christ m as m orning b y encouraging par- ents to read to children. When L y nda Po y ser, Head Librarian at Cha m plain Township Public Librar y , read about the project, she proposed to staff that the librar y collect new books and dis- tribute the m with the Christ m as baskets through the local food bank. What better wa y to have the librar y and the co mm unit y ju m p on this literac y bandwagon? The first edition of “A Book on Ever y Bed” So, in 2010, through the enthusias m and hard work of librar y staff and the generous response of the public, Cha m plain Librar y furnished 40 children with a brand new

Further- m ore, y ou’ll have the chance to ask y our questions and discuss with a phar m acist, a health pro m oter and a dietitian.” Did y ou know that al m ost 90 per cent of Canadians aged 50 and older know about osteoporosis but onl y 24 per cent have spo- ken with a health professional about it, and onl y 30 per cent have been tested for the disease? Recent surve y s done b y Osteoporosis Canada reveal that respondents are aware that age, gender and lack of calciu m and vita m in D are risk factors for osteoporosis, a disease characterized b y low bone m ass and the breakdown of bone tissue, leading to bones that are easier to break. Osteoporosis affects m ore than 2 m illion Canadians including one out of ever y three wo m en and at least one out of ever y five m en aged 50 and older. In Ontario alone, there are 57,000 osteoporotic fractures in Ontario each y ear.
