book on Christmas morning. Since then, the initiative has grown considerably. This year, Champlain Library hopes to supply books to approximately 100 children whose families are recipients of Christmas baskets

from both the Vankleek Hill and L’Orignal food banks. Champlain Library needs the support of the community. Give the gift of literacy to a child this Christmas. If you would like to donate a new book

to “A Book on Every Bed,” call Champlain Township Public Library at 613-678-2216 or stop by the library to be matched up with a child. The library will also accept monetary donations.

VANKLEEK HILL | In 2010, a grass-roots lit- eracy campaign called “A Book on Every Bed”was launched in Ithaca, NewYork. Working with a small literacy non-profit organization, Amy Dickinson, a newspaper columnist, hatched a simple plan with a far- flung goal: to foster a generation of readers. The idea was to put a million books at the foot of a million beds for a million children on Christmas morning by encouraging par- ents to read to children. When Lynda Poyser, Head Librarian at Champlain Township Public Library, read about the project, she proposed to staff that the library collect new books and dis- tribute them with the Christmas baskets through the local food bank. What better way to have the library and the community jump on this literacy bandwagon? The first edition of “A Book on Every Bed” So, in 2010, through the enthusiasm and hard work of library staff and the generous response of the public, Champlain Library furnished 40 children with a brand new HAWKESBURY | The Lower Outaouais Family Health Team will present an infor- mation session on “Healthy Bones” De- cember 4 at 144 Main St. East, suite 201, Hawkesbury. To register for the session on osteoporosis, call 613 636-0971. “It’s never too late to start taking care of your bones,” says dietitian Julie Ladouceur. “Osteoporosis is a disease that gradually develops with time, with no signs or symp- toms. The good news is that thanks to our LOFHT group session you’ll get tips and tools to take care of your health. Further- more, you’ll have the chance to ask your questions and discuss with a pharmacist, a health promoter and a dietitian.” Did you know that almost 90 per cent of Canadians aged 50 and older know about osteoporosis but only 24 per cent have spo- ken with a health professional about it, and only 30 per cent have been tested for the disease? Recent surveys done by Osteoporosis Canada reveal that respondents are aware that age, gender and lack of calcium and vitamin D are risk factors for osteoporosis, a disease characterized by low bone mass and the breakdown of bone tissue, leading to bones that are easier to break. Osteoporosis affects more than 2 million Canadians including one out of every three women and at least one out of every five men aged 50 and older. In Ontario alone, there are 57,000 osteoporotic fractures in Ontario each year. Are your bones healthy? newsroom@eap.on.ca
