teaches us to be grateful and to sày, “O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: his mercy èndureth for ever.” Object Lesson H e a r t s a n d H u r t s OBJECTS: A small heart cut from a yellow bar of soap, and a heart about the same size cut from a rubber sponge. LESSON: The difference between these two hearts is not in their colors. One is yellow and the other brown. The real difference is in the way they re spond when scratched. They are so much like Christians that I have called them Harriet and Hannah. You are wondering how they can be like Christians. Watch them when they are h u rt I will scratch Harriet with my finger nail. I try to smooth it over and ask her to forgive me for being unkind, but the cut still remains. She keeps the hurt and remembers it always. You can see the mark clearly. We shall give Hannah the same treat ment and see how she acts. She has Luke 18:1 And he spake a parable unto them to this end, th at men ought alw ays to pray* and not to fain t; 2 Saying, There w as in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded m an: 8 And there w as a widow In th at city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. 4 And he would not for a while; hut afterw ard he said w ithin himself, Though 1 fear not God, nor regard m an; 6 Yet because this widow troubleth me, 1 will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she w eary me, 6 And the Lord said, H ear w hat the un ju st judge salth. 7 And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry .day and night unto him, though he bear long w ith them? $ I tell yon t h a t : he will avenge them Speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth! 8 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves th a t they were righteous, and despised others: 10 TWo men went up into the temple to p ray ; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus w ith himself, God, I thank thee, th a t I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. 12 I fast twice in the week, 1 give tithes of all th a t I possess. .12^ And the publican;, standing a fa r off, would not lift np so much as big eyes unto heaven, but smote upon bis breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. 14 I tell you, this m an w ent down to Ills house justified rath er than the other: for every one th at exaltetli him self Shall be abased: and he th a t hum bleth him self shall be exalted. been hurt as badly as Harriet was, but she never shows it nor remembers it. Some Christians are like Hannah— when they are hurt they immediately forgive and forget, and go on living Without being marred by the hurt. ^Qther Christians are like Harriet—they are easily hurt and never forgive and forget. I am sure that the Christian who pleases God most is the one who, like Hannah, forgives and forgets. We read in Ephesians 4:32, “Be ye kind one to another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.’’ (v. 22). Following that utterance comes this teaching concerning prayer: “Men ought always to pray.” Prayer is there fore a moral obligation, acknowledging God’s authority; it is a confession of dependence upon God, and a require ment in obtaining fulfillment of God’s promises. And "men ought always to pray,” whether when^warring (Eph. 6:18), or working (Col. 4:2), or waiting (1 Thess. 5:17). Every hour is the prop er hour for prayer, and every hour pre sents the need for being constantly in prayer, Tha power in prayer is the faith that Qod is—that He is present, that He is able, and that He is willing to answer the prayers of His children. The direc tion in prayer is found in the Word of God that reveals the person, presence, power, and willingness of God. These two, the power and the direction, must be linked together if answers ’to prayer are to be assured. Power without direct tion would mean disaster, as a moving automobile without a competent driver means disaster; and direction without power would be useless, as an automo- BLAGKBO ARD LE SSON 'LORD.
