yield, or the traffic of Tyre could win. "Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred there with.” An ounce of heart’s ease is worth a ton of gold. . . —Charles Haddon Spurgeon. 11. Formed for Himself “This people have I formed for my self” (Isa. 43:21). It may be that you have had little time for His companionship . . . You were not made, first of all, to tell the gospel to the heathen whether a t home or abroad. You were not made, first of all, to try to win your companions for Christ. “This people have I formed for myself.” That is the first reason that He redeemed you and me; to be His friends.—W. W. Martin. 12. The Seed and the Harvest “In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand” (Eccl. 11:6). I t was only a tiny seed at the first, And its power I little knew; But ’twas sown, and the germ from its prison burst, And was nourished by sunshine and dew. The grain of the past was a blessing at last, In the bountiful harvest that grew. Go hopefully on in the work of the day, Scatter broadcast the seed of the Word; Sing thy song, though unseen; drop the word by the way, And leave the results with the Lord. Though but little a t most—and with nothing to boast, “What she could” will insure a re- wardl —W. J. H. Brealey. 18 . Limitless Experience “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Phil. 4:13). I t is the characteristic of spiritual ex periences that they have no limit. Our love may abound yet more and more; our peace may pass knowledge. The man whose pound became ten pounds achieved a notable work. But he might have made twenty. . . . Our vocabulary may not only increase in variety, but in sweetness of utterance. . . . Spots and wrinkles in the spiritual life may be removed. Love may become perfect love that casteth out fear. —F. W. Ainley. 14. Wrestling with God “And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him . . . And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me” (Gen. 32:24, 26). Prayer is the greatest weapon we possess. No matter how important the daily calls may be, . . . no work is of such importance as that’ of prayer—
hear thy voice; for sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance Is comely” (Cant. 2:14). Oh, that my adversaries knew how sweet my sighs for Christ are, and what it is for a sinner to lay his head on Christ’s breast, and to be over head and ears in Christ’s love! Alas, I cannot cause paper to speak the height and breadth and depth of it! . . . Oh, if that fair One would take the mask off His fair face, and I might see Him! —Samuel Rutherford. 7. The Safe Path ‘‘Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?” (Job 31:4). I walk .by faith and not by sight— I cannot see so very far ahead; And so His eyes search out the way for me, A path He knows is safe for me to tread. So let me walk in loving faith The safe, high path He has marked out for me, Content to walk with Him who is the Way, * Though just one step is all that I can see. —Maud E. Cramer. 8. ‘Reckoning on the Fact “Reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin” (Rom. 6:11). As you reckon oh this amazing fact, the power of it begins to be experienced . . . and there is worked out in some degree in your life, what God tells you is indeed a fact; your old nature is kept in the place of death, and its former power to make you sin has gone. The mystery of this truth is beyond the grasp of the human mind; the power of it in the life can be unmistakable. —David Tryon. 9 , Delight in His Fruit “I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste” (Cant. 2:3). Did Old Testament saints thus sit down with a recumbency on the person, work, and finished salvation of Jesus, as those determined' to rise no more, when they beheld Christ only through the shadow of good things to come? . . . For shame, my soul! Let it never be said that . . . their delight in those fruits of His salvation, which they par took of by anticipation, was sweeter to their taste, than it is now enjoyed by thee.—Robert Hawker. 10. Not in Possessions “A faithful man shall abound with blessings” (Prov. 28:20). Remember that a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of that which he possesseth.
