THIS LITTLE LIGHT (continued) “ I know that verse,” Karen said, “ ‘Ye are the light of the world.’ And I know another one, ‘Let your light so shine . . ” Kathy interrupted. “ I know one, I know one!” she shouted. “ One what?” “ One verse. Listen.” She sang in her childish treble: “ This little light of mine I’m going to let it shine.” Aunt Becky hugged her. “You see, you do have a little light,” she said. “ But how could the Lord Jesus be the light and we be the light too?” Karen wanted to know. “ I think it’s like this, dear. So long as He was in the world He was the Light of the World. But when He went back to heaven He sent His light into the world, so that everyone who believed on Him as Saviour might have this light and attract others to know Him, too.” “ Does our light go on and off like the fireflies?” asked Kathy. “ It never really goes off, dear, because Jesus is the One who makes it shine. But sometimes we get in the way so others can’t see it. The whole of Karen’s verse is, ‘Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.’ ” “What did the Lord Jesus mean by good works?” Karen asked. “My teacher says our works are no good at all. That’s why the Lord Jesus had to die for us.” “And she’s so right. Our good works can’t save us,

but they do help to show others that we are really Chris tians.” “How do we turn the light on?” Kathy wanted to know. Karen had slipped away to carry the melon rinds to the garbage can. “Well, I see Karen’s light now.” “You do? I don’t.” Kathy thought a moment, then she said, “You mean because she’s helping?” “ Exactly. Every time we do right things the little light goes on and tells others we belong to Him.” “Well, I finished my melon. Was I shining? Mommie always says, ‘If you take it you must eat it,’ you know.” “You were shining. Every time you are obedient you are shining.” “ Sister,” Kathy called, “ I’m always going to finish. I’ve made up my mind.” Karen came over and kissed her. “ Let’s turn the fire flies loose she said. “ I think they are happier in the meadow.” With a flip of the wrist Kathy upset the jar. “ Goodby, little bugs, goodby,” she said. “ Go back to your meadow. You shine there and I’ll shine here.” “ And I better go shine in the kitchen,” Aunt Becky said. “You girls may swing until I finish the dishes, and then you must go to bed.” Through the kitchen window she watched them. It was growing too dark now to see their flying pony tails, but she could hear the creak of the swings and their happy childish voices singing:

“ This little light of mine I’m going to let it shine.” “ I’ve made up my mind,” Kathy added.
