id ea s for CHURCH RECREATION By JIM SLEVCOVE A c tiv ity N iglit l a n an activity night for your youth this summer and see how it will make your group grow. Enthusiasm will be generated by competition. And competition can be produced simply and effectively for the high school department, for in stance, by dividing into two teams. Select team captains and a name for each group, or let them name them selves. (We once used “Greens” and “Whites,” our club colors.) Next, plan a sports or social activ ity for each Friday or Saturday in the coming six or eight weeks. Work out a scoring system for each activ ity and keep a running score on dis play. If points are given for attend ance, participation and the bringing of visitors, as well as winning, every one will feel needed by his team. Members will be reminding each other to come to activity night. To help things along and stimulate in terest announce the prize. This might well be a banquet or party in honor of the winners given and paid for by the losers. Naturally, the winners will be the team with the most points after the six or eight weeks’ contest. What shall the activities be? Here are some ideas. A swim party can be highlighted with races, water games and relays. Try a relay with a burn ing candle as a baton. A beach party and hamburger fry are fun. There are picnics that can feature bike rid ing (try night bike riding), horse back riding, a treasure hunt, a scav enger hunt, picnic, games and con tests, and softball. Couples softball is always popular. Each position on the field is played by a fellow and girl, holding hands. They let go only when one is about to catch a ball or is up at bat. After the ball is hit, they grab hands again and run the bases. Another picnic idea is a twilight af fair. Begin in the late afternoon and conclude with a steak fry (or ham burgers) and campfire around 9:00 p.m. Plan a gym night to play basket ball, badminton and volleyball. Play “ blind” volleyball, too, by hanging bed sheets over the net so your op ponents cannot be seen. There is al ways roller and ice skating, bowling and miniature golf. A hay-ride or fishing trip might be enjoyed. You can have fun on sight-seeing trips; visit the zoo, museum, orchestra, plan etarium, large industrial firms and attend church rallies and conventions.
