EDITOR'S NOTE: Mrs. Betty Bruechert, former Editor of the King's Business, has been re quested to compile a series of informative articles ^on the history of this 50-year-old publication. This month: "The Format." Part III —•The Format n p H E K i n g ’ s B u sin e ss came into be- Jl- mg January 1, 1910, so that Jan uary 1, 1960 will mark its Golden Anniversary. Ten different editors-in- chief have served this magazine, with a host of helpers in many capacities. Answers to prayer have matched the numerous problems. The purpose to produce a “ Bible Family Magazine” (first so-named in October 1923), sound in the faith, of literary excel lence, attractive appearance and of moderate cost, was not an easy task to accomplish. Naturally, whatever problems beset the Bible Institute as a whole were reflected in its official publication. The format of a 5(4 x 8(4 book continued until October 1923, when it was altered to an 8 x 11 which dif fers only slightly from the present size of 8(4 x 11. No other radical change took place until the very dark days of Bible Institute history when, due to economic pressures following the depression, the very existence of the school was threatened. The King’s Business was obliged to put up a real fight for survival. One of the drastic measures very reluctantly adopted in 1939 was a change from slick paper to newsprint and a consequent reduc tion of the subscription rate to one- third of its former price of $1.50. One of the editors of that day has stated: “We did the best we could to improve the content of the magazine to counteract its cheap appearance.” Under God, it is due those self-sacri ficing editors and their helpers who labored day and night to keep the prestige of the magazine high against such odds, that there was no suspen sion of publication. After the school’s own crisis was past, thanks to the goodness of God in raising up leaders to see it through its difficulties, the World War II pa per shortage had to be faced. So the use of newsprint, with all of its at tending difficulties, particularly in the reproduction of cuts, continued until October 1946. Then the maga zine was able to try the offset process for a year. While this made a very attractive publication, with unlimited use of pictures with this photographic type of printing, the older readers did not appreciate the “ shiny print.” Finally October 1947 brought the glad day when The King’s Business

returned to letter press and slick pa per, and although for financial rea sons, the number of pages was re duced, it began to look like a real magazine once more! Format is im portant but not as important as con tent and it is upon content that the emphasis continues and that is why The King’s Business is the vigorous journal that it is today.
