LOCATION,
1. The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos: Located in the northern Caribbean, these low-lying islands are known for their stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters. They serve as a gateway to the Caribbean for many travelers from North America. 2. The Greater Antilles: This group includes the larger islands of Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola (shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic), and Puerto Rico. These islands are characterized by their size, diverse landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. 3. The Lesser Antilles: This is where Antigua & Barbuda is situated. The Lesser Antilles are further divided into two groups: The Leeward Islands: Including Antigua & Barbuda, these islands are known for their relatively calm waters and diverse landscapes. The Windward Islands: Located in the southern part of the Lesser Antilles, these islands are more exposed to the Atlantic trade winds. The Caribbean Archipelago is typically grouped into three main categories:
Bahamas
Cuba
Cayman Islands
Jamaica
We’re situated about 1,100 miles (1,770 kilometers) Southeast of Miami and roughly 400 miles (640 kilometers) North of Venezuela. This central position in the Eastern Caribbean makes Antigua & Barbuda an ideal base for exploring other neighbouring islands. n To the Southwest, approximately 27 miles (43 kilometers) away, lies Montserrat. Known for its active Soufrière Hills volcano, Montserrat provides a fascinating glimpse into the region’s volcanic activity. n Northwest of us, roughly 60 miles (97 kilometers) away, you’ll find St. Kitts and Nevis. These islands are visible from Antigua’s West coast on clear days. n To the South, about 47 miles (76 kilometers) away, is Guadeloupe, adding a touch of French culture to our diverse neighborhood. You can also access destinations like St. Maarten, Dominica, or the British Virgin Islands, each offering its very own unique Caribbean experience.
ANTIGUA & BARBUDA
ANTIGUA & BARBUDA IS STRATEGICALLY LOCATED AT 17 DEGREES NORTH OF THE EQUATOR AND 61.8 DEGREES WEST LONGITUDE. THIS PUTS US IN THE HEART OF THE LEEWARD ISLANDS, PART OF THE LESSER ANTILLES. Antigua is the larger of our two main islands and spans approximately 108 square miles (280 square kilometers). Its terrain is varied, with our highest point, Mount Obama (formerly Boggy Peak), reaching 1,319 feet (402 meters). This elevation provides Antigua with a diverse ecosystem, from lowland areas to more mountainous regions. Barbuda is located about 30 miles north of Antigua and presents a different geological profile. It’s a low-lying coral island, covering about 62 square miles (160 square kilometers). The highest point on Barbuda is only about 125 feet (38 meters), meaning it is not visible from Antigua’s shores, despite their proximity.

ISLAND INSIGHTS
n The capital city, St. John’s, situated on Antigua’s West Coast, serves as the nation’s administrative and cultural hub. n English is our official language, though you may also encounter the melodic cadence of Antiguan Creole in your daily interactions on the island. n Antigua & Barbuda operates as a constitutional monarchy within the Commonwealth, with King Charles III as the head of state. n Prime Minister Gaston Browne, leading the Antigua Barbuda Labour Party, currently heads the government. We proudly celebrate our independence from the United Kingdom each year on November 1st, a date marking our sovereign status since 1981. n The economy in Antigua & Barbuda operates on a dual currency system of East Caribbean Dollars (EC$) and US Dollars (US$). n As of 2024, our population stands at approximately 95,000, fostering a close-knit community atmosphere that extends a warm welcome to visitors. n The magnificent Frigatebird, is our National bird and Barbuda hosts one of the world’s largest Frigatebird sanctuaries, home to over 5,000 of these majestic creatures.
n For your day-to-day needs, the Epicurean supermarkets in Jolly Harbour and St. John’s offer a wide range of products. Be prepared to bring your own bags, as plastic bags are not provided. n The pharmacy in Jolly Harbour, is an absolute treasure trove, it stocks pretty much everything you need, and a load of stuff you might not have known you needed and also didn’t expect to find in a pharmacy. So if you need something and you’re not sure where to get it, try the pharmacy first! n Healthcare facilities, including hospitals and after-hours emergency clinics are readily available. However, obtaining travel insurance before you visit is advisable.
n Our tropical maritime climate, moderated by northeast trade winds, ensures year-round temperatures between 27°C and 32°C, making Antigua & Barbuda an ideal destination regardless of the season. n For visitors, our visa-free policy for short stays simplifies entry procedures. n Betty’s Hope, an open-air museum featuring a working sugar mill, offers a glimpse into our agricultural past and the complex history of sugar production in the Caribbean.

DISC VER 365 ANTIGUA & BARBUDA
USEFUL THINGS WE WISHED WE’D KNOWN These are just a few of the useful things we wish we had known when we first arrived in Antigua & Barbuda. Armed with this knowledge, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy everything Antigua & Barbuda has to offer, without any surprises.
Money Matters: While both East Caribbean Dollars (EC$) and US Dollars (US$) are widely accepted, even if you pay in US$, you might receive change in EC$. Many tourist-oriented businesses quote prices in US$, so always clarify which currency you’re being charged in to avoid any confusion. Some small businesses, shops, and petrol stations may not accept credit cards, so carrying cash is always a good idea. You cannot use contactless payments, Apple Pay or Google Pay. It is also not uncommon for retailers to require ID to go with your card payment even if you use a chip and pin so do not be offended if they ask. Driving Tips: If you plan to drive while in Antigua & Barbuda, you’ll need to bring your home country’s driving license and purchase a temporary local license from a car rental company which is around US$10. Driving is on the left side of the road, and while most roads are in fair condition, you should watch out for potholes, wandering livestock and slow-moving vehicles. It’s also worth noting that petrol stations can sometimes close unexpectedly, so keep an eye on your fuel gauge. Be prepared for some local driving quirks, such as cars stopping unexpectedly in the middle of the road in front of you just for the driver to stop and chat to a friend on the side of the road, if this happens, be patient and just pass when you can.
Local Transportation: Local buses are an affordable and authentic way to get around. The fare is generally EC$3, and buses operate on a fairly informal schedule, with locals being more than happy to guide you. Taxis are also readily available, and drivers often act as informal tour guides, offering insights into the best places to visit. Sun Protection and Climate: Temperatures remain warm all year-round, but the sun can be particularly intense during the summer months. Protect yourself with a minimum SPF 30 sunscreen, and consider wearing a rash vest with long sleeves if you plan to spend extended time at the beach or out on the water.
10
Shopping and Essentials: The supermarkets do not provide plastic bags, so bring your own tote bags or you will have to purchase one in store. Also, alcohol sales are prohibited on Easter Sunday, so plan accordingly. Beach Etiquette and Rentals: Amenities like sunbeds and beach umbrellas generally come with a rental fee. Typically, sunbeds cost around US$20 per day, and umbrellas US$10 per day, a small price to pay for a day of relaxation on one of the world’s most beautiful coastlines. But be prepared and make sure you bring cash. Electrical Outlets: The electrical voltage in Antigua & Barbuda is usually 220V, so check the voltage requirements for your electronic devices and bring a transformer (not just an adapter) for any sensitive electronics. Wildlife and Nature: Mosquitoes and red fire ants are common, so it’s wise to protect yourself, particularly at dawn and dusk, by wearing long sleeves and using insect repellent. If you’re allergic to insect bites, packing antihistamines is a good precaution. Island Time: Finally, embrace the relaxed pace of island life. Things might move a little slower than you’re used to, but that’s part of the charm. Whether it’s waiting a few extra minutes for a meal or taking your time to explore a secluded beach, let the island’s rhythm guide you, and you’ll find yourself unwinding in no time.

u ST JOHN’S The capital of Antigua & Barbuda, this is where you’ll find a whole host of historical and cultural landmarks, including The Museum of Antigua and Barbuda which is well worth a visit. As well as the main exhibitions it is home to an extensive research library open to the public, where you will find a vast collection of archaeological artifacts, monographs (some unpublished), maps, and hundreds of photographs. If you are keen to take a little knowledge home with you, there are Antiguan history and archaeology books and framed maps to be found in the gift shop too. There is also St John’s Cathedral which has a rich history dating back to the 17th century, making it one of the oldest religious structures in the Caribbean. Its distinctive baroque architecture, with its twin towers topped with cupolas make it an architectural gem and despite initial criticism to the contrary, it is now celebrated as one of the most impressive cathedrals in the West Indies. If you climb to the top of the two towers you will get the chance to enjoy panoramic views of the island and breathtaking vistas of Antigua’s landscape and coastline. St John’s is also the place to go if you’re looking to shop. Having spent more than 15 years living on this paradise island in the heart of the Caribbean we have come to love many of the beaches that cover the coastline on both Antigua and Barbuda and found that no matter the type of beach experience you’re after, you’ll find it.
BEACH FUN FOR EVERYONE
Dickenson Bay
W hether it’s relaxation and solitude or fun and frolics in the sea, exploring underwater worlds or embracing invigorating water sports, chilling at a beach bar with friends or enjoying a gourmet meal in a picturesque setting, there is something for everyone. Here is a list of the most captivating beaches you won’t want to miss. We have listed them by coastal regions and have located them out on the map, so you can find them. Antigua & Barbuda is famous for having an astounding 365 beaches stretched over it’s 95 mile coastline. That’s right, you could go to the beach every day for a year and never need to visit the same one twice.

beach is easily accessed through the Jolly Harbour community, which has a large number of shops and facilities which visitors can use including, supermarket, pharmacy, beach bars, restaurants, and jet ski rental. The powdery white sand and the shallow, clear waters make Jolly Beach ideal for long, leisurely walks and swimming. This is our local favourite, with its stunning sunsets making it the perfect afternoon outing and be sure to watch for the “green flash”! Pearns Point: A sanctuary for those seeking seclusion. This peninsula flaunts seven pristine beaches, often deserted, giving you the luxury of feeling like you have found your very own personal haven. Dickenson Bay Beach: White powder sand beaches, gentle turquoise waters and located just a few miles north of St. John’s, it is probably one of Antigua’s most famous and frequently visited beaches due to its vibrant atmosphere and plethora of amenities. Visitors can indulge in a variety of water sports or just spend time relaxing in the tranquil waters which are ideal for swimmers of all ages. We love the beach front dining here and the proximity of the numerous restaurants to the water, making it one of our favourite day time spots.
WEST COAST A Popular Paradise; With pristine beaches seamlessly leading one, into the next, creating an almost endless shoreline, the West Coast beckons sunset worshippers and water enthusiasts alike. Darkwood Beach: The calm and gentle waters of Darkwood Beach make it perfect for swimming and snorkelling. The waters are clear, allowing for good visibility when exploring the underwater world where you will find a variety of marine life. There is also a vibrant beach bar and restaurant, if you fancy staying into the evening and enjoying one of the stunning sunsets. We often visit for a day out in the water with the kids for a bit of everything, snorkelling, sandcastles, swimming and tasty food. Jolly Beach: This expansive stretch of powdery white sand, is popular with visitors as it boasts several beach bars and restaurants, and a lively atmosphere, but if you are seeking shade under the trees or a tranquil nook away from the crowd, don’t worry, the beach is almost a mile long, and you are sure to find a calm spot. Rendezvous Bay: This secluded gem, accessible via a hike or ATV, promises serenity and pristine waters once you get there. Its shaded areas are perfect for leisurely relaxation. Pigeon Point Beach: A picturesque and popular beach located close to Falmouth Harbour. This stunning and historically significant beach offers a combination of natural beauty, water activities, and a touch of Antigua’s colonial past. Whether you’re interested in sunbathing, swimming, exploring history, or simply relaxing in a scenic setting and enjoying a gourmet meal at Catherine’s Café, Pigeon Point Beach has something to offer you.
W Morris Bay: Morris Bay beach is a hidden gem and a paradise for swimmers, boasting an exceptional snorkelling spot. The beach is less crowded than some of the more popular spots, making it a perfect retreat for those looking to unwind in a peaceful environment. The surrounding palm trees and lush vegetation add to the tropical paradise feel, making Morris Bay beach a must go, for nature lovers and those who love the underwater world. This is one of our favourites for snorkelling, and once we’ve built up an appetite we love to satisfy our taste buds with a fresh fruit salad from the local stall or barbecued chicken from the roadside vendors. SOUTH COAST In deep water; home to several marinas and beaches popular with water activities.
If you think you have found the best beach in your first days in Antigua & Barbuda, don’t stop visiting new ones, we have had many, many favourites over the years as they all have something slightly different to offer.
Galleon Beach: Located at the entrance to Nelson’s Dockyard this beach is known for being a favourite spot for sea turtles. If you’re lucky, you can spot these gentle creatures swimming in the crystal-clear waters or even nesting on the beach, especially during certain times of the year. For those brave enough to venture from the beach and over a few rocks; a short walk to the east end will lead you out to the Pillars of Hercules, where you’ll find opportunities for some deeper snorkelling. We often visit by boat but it is just as easy by car, and is a great day out for the family with very calm waters and a restaurant that has everything you might need for a day on the beach.

EAST COAST Unspoiled, wild beauty; secluded bays, natural coves, sea caves, blowholes, and arches carved by the relentless force of the Atlantic Ocean. Half Moon Bay: Featured in Conde Nast’s top 100 beaches, this crescent shaped beach captures hearts. Its location on the East Coast exposes it to the Atlantic Ocean’s waves, making it an excellent spot for bodyboarding. Or if you prefer to lounge on the beach and soak up the sun the fine pinkish-white sand and the vibrant coral reefs make it a haven for sunbathers and snorkelers alike. The untouched, rugged landscape surrounding Half Moon Bay enhances its charm, providing visitors with a sense of escape and serenity. We also love the beach bar here, which is famous for serving signature rum punch slushies! Long Bay: A peaceful retreat, Long Bay is known for its calm and tranquil waters, making it an ideal spot for floating and leisurely swimming. A nearby bar ensures you are refreshed and gives you the opportunity to mix with other beach goers if you desire. Devil’s Bridge is right nearby, but if you do go exploring, tread carefully on the rock bridge as the sea surges below and the waves can make it a little slippy.

There are rental shops and schools in the area where beginners can learn and experienced riders can gear up. Prickly Pear Island: A small uninhabited island offering a more secluded beach experience just off Antigua’s main turf. Accessed from the Hodges Bay Hotel, a trip to this remote island for lunch is a wonderful day out. Great Bird Island: A favoured stop for island-hoppers, it enchants visitors with serene beaches, beginner-friendly snorkelling spots and of course the bird watching opportunities. BEACH LIFE
MORE THAN A BEACH It is well known that Antigua has 365 beaches, one for every day of the year. It is also well known that they’re all pretty spectacular in their own ways. So, if you’re only staying for a week or two, how will you decide which ones to visit and which ones to save for your next trip?
W e talked with our team at the Luxury Locations Group and some Antiguan Locals and asked them to share their favourite beaches, to help you decide which ones are definitely not to be missed!
PINCHING BAY
NADIA DYSON Luxury Locations Group
JERMAINE BOWEN Luxury Locations Group Darkwood is my favourite beach in Antigua. Driving to Darkwood, which is southwest of the island, provides serene views of the beautiful green and blue of my land. As a lover of long drives, driving to darkwood’s shimmering waters gives me unmatched tranquility that keeps me going back. A core memory at my favourite beach is attending the floating Waterpark. It’s an exciting and unique way to have a laugh with your friends when you inevitably accidently plunge into the water- which I did numerous times. I would say I have visited around 30 beaches, give or take. I love Darkwood as it has a little reef for snorkelling as you walk in, shallow and clear water and a great beach bar. The kids love Darkwood as they used to play on the inflatable water park every weekend so I have lots of great memories of fun times we’ve had there together as a family.
SAM DYSON Luxury Locations Group
With a boat and an ATV you can visit significantly more beaches than with a car, so I would say I’ve visited around 60 or so. My favourite is Pinching Bay, it’s only really accessible by boat and we have had some wonderful family days on the beach there. Due to the reef it is only really possible to get one or two boats anchored at a time there so the 500m long beach often remains almost completely deserted. It has everything you could want, calm clear waters, great for snorkelling, small pools for paddling, hundreds of cairns stacked up at one end and a little shade for a beach BBQ. Although not my favourite beach as I have only spent a few afternoons there, Hermitage Bay beach holds a very special place in my heart; it is where I proposed to Nadia and where we spent our ten year wedding anniversary having a lovely romantic picnic to celebrate where it all started. I would say I have visited around 20 beaches so far, but it’s hard to remember given most come with a serve of rum punch. Valley Church and Darkwood are my favourites, due to the gorgeous colour of the water and how clear it is. Also, from the water looking back at the beaches you get an amazing view of the tropical fauna. I have some very special memories of Darkwood and Jolly Beach where I have seen some stunning sunsets. One evening on Jolly beach the sky looked orange, purple and pink all at once, honestly it was incredible. CARLY DAVIES Luxury Locations Group

DICKENSON BAY
JOVANNA DECEMBER Luxury Locations Group
KERWIN JOHNSON Johnson Taxis and Tours Dickenson Bay is a very nice beach it’s lively, and there’s the floating bar which is very cool, there are also lots of different restaurants on that beach, and you can do horseback riding, and lots of water sports. I also really like Jolly Beach, that long stretch of very fine white sand that you can dip your fingers and toes in is just lovely. It’s also lively from time to time. Then Valley Church Beach is also a favourite, the water is very shallow, you can hang out with your spouse, under the trees if you want some shade, lay down and read a book, and enjoy the view of Jolly Beach across the way.
I have visited a significant number of Antigua & Barbuda’s 365 beaches, but I have not kept track of the exact number. Each beach has its own unique charm and beauty but my favourite is Dickenson Bay. I love the pristine white sand and the crystal clear waters and it also has a vibrant atmosphere with beach bars and restaurants, making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the surroundings. One particularly special memory I have of Dickenson Bay is watching the breathtaking sunset while enjoying a delicious dinner at one of the beachfront restaurants with my family. The combination of the stunning colours in the sky, the sound of the waves, and the delicious food created a truly unforgettable experience.
PEARNS POINT
JOELLE SPENCER Luxury Locations Group I have visited 12 of Antigua & Barbuda’s beaches and Pearns Point is my favourite. The water is always crystal clear, very calm and it is never crowded, so I just get a very tranquil and relaxing atmosphere every time I go. The family picnics that we have at Pearns Point, seeing family members I haven’t seen in a while, socialising, playing games and having a good time on the beach is a very special beach memory for me.

LONG BAY BEACH
Sadly, we never get to the beach because we’re always working, but when we do, we love going to Long Bay Beach the water is really nice and shallow. We would usually go down with friends, take a cooler and lime in the sea with drinks, maybe bring a BBQ and grill some food as the sun goes down. My favourite beach to go to in Antigua is Long Bay Beach. As I live in town, I enjoy the drive over with my family, enjoying the scenery along the way. It has shallow crystal clear waters and the current pushes you back on shore, rather than pulling you out, which means its great for the kids. It’s also quite lively because there are hotels close by, so you get a lot of tourist interactions, which can be fun. KAHYEME BENJAMIN The Perfect Chef
