PROTECT YOURSELF AND THE ENVIRONMENT When choosing sunscreen for a trip to Antigua, it’s important to consider products that are reef-safe and environmentally friendly. Here are some of the best types of suncream that are known to be safer for the marine environment: Mineral-based Sunscreens Zinc Oxide: Offers broad-spectrum protection and is less likely to harm marine life. Titanium Dioxide: Another mineral-based option that is reef-safe. Reef-safe Sunscreens Look for labels that explicitly state “reef-safe” or “reef-friendly.” These products are formulated without harmful chemicals. Chemical-free Sunscreens Avoid sunscreens with Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Octocrylene, and other chemicals known to harm coral reefs and marine life. Antigua & Barbuda is now PLASTIC SHOPPING BAG FREE, so during your stay, any time you’re headed to the shops, make sure you bring a bag with you once you’ve purchased your groceries. Most of the shops will provide a paper bag or will provide a fibre bag which will last a few months. In many supermarkets you can buy one or the other but will have to pay for them so a good tote bag is a good thing to bring or purchase from a local vendor on island. THIS IS TURTLE TERRITORY In some areas of Antigua along the beaches where turtles are known to nest, you will notice red lights. The hatchlings have an instinctive response to light which leads them towards the sea. When artificial lights were previously put in on the beach fronts these hatchlings would get confused and stray. So the red lights have been put in to prevent baby turtles from going the wrong way. Sea turtles lay their eggs in the beach sand, so if you’re on a beach that is well know for turtle activity, and you’re looking to dig a hole or a moat for your sandcastle make sure you don’t dig above the surf line in the dry sand, but rather do it in wet sand where there will not be any eggs.
