Commodore

Gentle Members,

2022 dawns full of bright promise for all of us who are fortunate enough to be part of the Marco Island Yacht Club. I’d like to say a few words about your 2022 Bridge. Everyone knows that the Bridge holds the traditional Evening Colors ceremony, our visible link to yachting traditions and a cherished opportunity to honor America and our Veterans. But there is more to your Bridge than snappy white suits. You have a Bridge staffed with capable and enthusiastic volunteer officers, with Flag Officers crafting amazing opportunities for all Members to enjoy the yachting life, from Day Cruises to nearby favorite haunts, to Sunset

and Twilight Cruises where we make new friends and enjoy old ones on the water, to Extended Cruises, foreign and domestic, where we can merge that wonderful feeling of friendship and belonging with the excitement and adventure of travel, all the time seeing a different part of the world through the eyes of our dear friends. Your Bridge also has outstanding, exceptional Staff Officers who are busy all year long working for you. There are two Fleet Captains, the Fleet Captain Power to support you in all things motor boating, and our Fleet Captain Sail, who leads our acclaimed Youth Sailing Programs, inspiring a new generation with leadership and life skills that can only be learned on the water. Your Port Captain is our Ambassador to visiting yachtsmen from reciprocal Yacht Clubs from around the country as they arrive, greeting them with the warmest of smiles, and introducing them to our beautiful Marina and Club. Your Quartermaster makes certain that those reciprocal visitors see their own Club burgee flying proudly on our flagstaff, ensures that protocol is followed, and cares for our National Colors and Club standards. There is so much more to the Quartermaster’s job than the firing of the cannon! Your Safety and Training Officer ensures that every boat involved in a Club activity is inspected and ready, and is a valuable resource for questions about safety, boat handling, navigation, maintenance and more. Your Secretary keeps the records, the minutes, and keeps all Officers in line with procedure and tradition. Your Fleet Surgeon, a Medical Doctor, shares valuable medical advice with Members as it relates to boating, cruising, general health and safety. Your Chaplin is a spiritual mentor, and reminds us all of what we are genuinely thankful for. Your FCYC Director, together with your FCYC Alternate Director, work diligently to represent your Club to the 35 other member clubs of the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs, making sure that all of you, our Members, are made welcome at each of these reciprocating Clubs throughout Florida whenever you would like to visit. As Commodore, I am proud to serve with this large and talented team, dedicated as each one of them are to making your Club experience the very best it can be. We’re all here to help you make unforgettable memories – let’s start tomorrow to make some more together. Tom Wentworth
