EMBRACE THE CLIMB
HOW CONQUERING CHALLENGES LEADS TO NEW HEIGHTS
One of our favorite things to do as a family is hike. There’s something extraordinary about reaching the highest point of our journey and stopping just to take in the view. But part of what makes it so special is the fact that we had hiked there, even though it may have been a challenge at some points. I say this because we’re taking a trip to Colorado soon, where we plan to hike and reach new peaks together. And as we prepare, it makes me think about the other uphill battles I’ve had in my life — maybe not so literal as the ones I’ll encounter on my trip. For me, my biggest uphill battle in life has been how reserved I am. Not exactly shy, but as a young person, I wasn’t completely comfortable knocking on doors and talking to strangers about myself, of all people. The idea of selling myself and providing strangers with estimates was incredibly anxiety-inducing. Still, I knew I had to force myself out of my comfort zone to succeed. During this time in the late 1990s, I worked at a nursery where I would drive a truck and deliver plants. The job was great; I didn’t have to pitch to strangers or convince anyone of anything. I simply had to hop in a truck and drive. At one point, I remember thinking, “I could just keep working here and stay comfortable.” But then, I looked around the nursery at the other people who had been working there their whole lives, driving the trucks and delivering plants. Sure, they were comfortable, but was that what I wanted to do for the rest of my life? What about my dreams as an entrepreneur? The only way to make them happen was to leave the nursery — my comfort zone — and push myself to pursue my dreams, even if that meant I would be uncomfortable. So I went for it. At 20 years old, I started working for myself, pitching myself and my business to complete strangers. To be honest, it’s been hard. My
reserved personality has been the most challenging part of my journey, and pushing myself to open up sometimes takes a lot out of me. However, I’m happy I took that first step and left my comfort zone. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I didn’t. Often before we start something that we know will be an uphill battle, we build it up in our mind until it seems impossible. The good news is that taking that first step to begin the climb always turns out better than you imagine, especially if you have a plan. In my case, it was writing things down and rehearsing what I would say to potential new clients before ever speaking to them. For you, that may look completely different. The point is that if you over-prepare for that first step outside your comfort zone, you can do anything. Besides, even if things don’t go your way at the start, the fall from the first step up the mountain isn’t that far from the ground. If you make a mistake, re-collect yourself and try to take that step again! There are multiple ways to the top of the mountain. Now, in retrospect, these uphill battles are what keep things interesting. Really, it’s the juice and energy that motivates me. It has taken me years to climb my mountain and become comfortable selling myself, but the view from the top is worth all of the stress and pain I endured. So this month, I advise anyone facing an uphill battle of their own to take that first step (and prepare for it, too!) if you haven’t yet — no matter how small it is. If you never challenge yourself, you’ll never know what you’re capable of.

Our Niche as a Full- Service Company CHOOSE BLG TO GET EVERYTHING YOU WANT
It can be a lot of work to coordinate your outdoor remodeling project. Jumping between several different teams and specialties, plus inconsistent pricing, can cost
you hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars. So why go to five different companies to work on your yard? Why not choose one company, one professional designer, and one team?
While some landscapers claim to save you money, you might not save money at all. We wanted to offer a completely streamlined redesign experience that could make your dreams into reality — HGTV-worthy, but not exclusive to television. That’s our secret at BLG Environmental: We do a lot more multifaceted work than people expect. Not everyone realizes that an amazing landscape also needs hardscaping, irrigation, and outdoor lighting. We do it all!
If you need proof, take a peek at our campaign of newsletters. We’ve featured many products in this newsletter, from Wi-Fi-enabled lighting fixtures to pavers. Not every landscaping company can work with that technology or those materials.
BITSY BLAST OFF! JUMPIN’ JULIET
Hello, newsletter kitties — I mean friends! It’s Juliet! If you can’t tell, my favorite show lately is called “SuperKitties,” and it’s about four kitties in the town of
Kittydale who are also superheroes! It’s a lot like that other show Gavin really likes called “Paw Patrol,” but instead of a team of puppies saving the day, it’s cats.
My favorite character on the show is Bitsy, because she’s the smallest and the youngest SuperKitty in the group — she’s itsy bitsy! She’s a super cute white cat who wears a teal mask and a super suit. Bitsy’s power is superspeed, and when there are problems in the show like Cat Burglar stealing something, she
says, “Ready, blast off!” I can relate a lot to Bitsy because I’m pretty fast too. Sometimes Daddy and
I will have our own blast-off, where he says, “Reaaadddyyyy,” and I start to run in place really really fast. Then together, we’ll yell, “Bitsy, blast off!” and take off running as fast as we can! Daddy is pretty fast, but I’m always faster just like Bitsy. I love Bitsy so much that I even have a Bitsy swimsuit and nightgown, and I might even be her for Halloween this year too. One of the reasons I love Bitsy is because she’s really sassy, just like me, and she’s also the smallest in the group like me too! But even though she’s the smallest, she doesn’t let that stop her from saving the day and helping people. And, just like the SuperKitties, I want to help people and be “brave, smart, strong, and kind” — which they always say when they save the day! So if you’re ever in trouble and need some help, you can count on me and my friends, the SuperKitties!

Keep Those Pesky Pests Away!
SUMMER TIPS FOR INSECT-FREE FUN! DON’T LET THE BUGS BITE
USE INSECT REPELLENTS. One of the most effective ways to keep bugs from biting is to use some form of bug repellent. Today, many people opt for non-spray repellent alternatives like repellent patches, wristbands, or clip-ons, many of which work great. The type of repellent isn’t as important as whether it contains one of these main ingredients:
August is the last full month of summer, which means bugs are at their pesky peak. If you and your family love to get outside in the summertime, protecting your family from bug bites is about more than their itchy aftermath.
Bugs can carry many diseases that put you, your family, and your pets at risk. For example, mosquitoes and ticks can transmit the West Nile virus, while ticks can spread Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, anaplasmosis, and much more — including causing alpha-gal syndrome (AGS), which is a life- threatening allergic reaction. So, if you and your family find yourselves outside this summer, here are some tips to keep those creepy-crawlies at bay. COVER UP! One of the most straightforward ways to ensure no one gets bitten by a bug is to cover any exposed skin when outside. If you can, wear long-sleeved shirts, full-length pants, tall socks, and closed-toe shoes, especially when hiking or camping. And if you can, tuck your pants into your socks or shoes to prohibit anything from crawling up your legs. CHOOSE YOUR OUTDOOR TIME WISELY. Mosquitoes are most active in the early morning and late evening, so avoid going outside during dawn or dusk if possible.
• •
Lemon-eucalyptus oil
• •
Picaridin
Citronella oil (combined with thyme for ticks)
Diethyltoluamide (DEET)
GET RID OF ANY STANDING WATER NEAR YOUR HOUSE. Mosquitoes use stagnant water to lay their eggs, so any filled buckets, partially filled
kiddie pools, broken fountains, or even discarded toys that have collected water can all attract mosquitoes to your yard. Routinely check your yard and dump out any water you find.
Lastly, be sure to thoroughly check for bugs on both your family and your pets before ever setting foot inside!
