History of the Red Tees

In 2015 Garth Harrington and Rich Shorkey began discussing the need for a set of tees forward from the White Tees in order to promote member retention. They wanted to increase retention among our aging golf membership and also increase interest among high handicappers and, hopefully, get more members to upgrade their membership category in order to play the Rogue Course. Garth and Rich prepared a detailed presentation to the Golf Committee and Grounds Committee explaining this need and showing potential forward tee locations and yardages. Cost was a factor at that time and the idea was put on the “back burner”. Jim Buck, RVCC Senior Men President and member of the Golf Committee, did not let the idea die. Jim repeatedly brought up the necessity for forward tees in Golf Committee meetings. Thanks to the support of Tracy Snyder and Craig Hilty temporary “Pear” Tees were placed. As they became popular with Senior Men and Women, they were renamed Red Tees and became a permanent fixture. This year, almost 10 years later, funds were available and a number of permanent, raised Red Tee Boxes were constructed on the Rogue Course. They opened for use on Monday, April 14 with ceremonial tee offs by Garth Harrington, Rich Shorkey, and Jim Buck on the First and Seventh Holes.
