A Letter from LFOLA’s New Chair Jim Dean, Board Chair, Lake Forest Open Lands Association

Growing up in Lake Forest instilled a deep appreciation for the outdoors in me. When I moved back to town in 2012, it was remarkable to experience the growth of Lake Forest Open Lands (LFOLA) as it had expanded from a few nature preserves to ten and growing annually. Our local nonprofit stands out for its high impact and dedication to engaging the entire community with open spaces through diverse programming and special events. Sharing a love for the outdoors with family is a meaningful experience, and volunteering with LFOLA over the past decade has provided invaluable insights into its unwavering mission. From quiet morning hikes to family-friendly events, Lake Forest Open Lands offers something special for everyone. Serving as the Chair of the Board of Governors in the coming years is an immense privilege and an opportunity to further support this incredible organization.

Thank you to our staff, board, volunteers, members, and supporters for contributing to the success of our unique and highly lauded conservation organization that began in 1967. Lake Forest Open Lands would not be the vital community organization it is without all your support. I hope to see you down the trail or at an event soon.

A Letter from the President Ryan London, President and CEO, Lake Forest Open Lands Association

Dear Friends in Conservation, This past year has reaffirmed my belief that when people and nature connect, both flourish. Each trail walked, prairie burned, easement monitored, and child inspired represents a seed of stewardship—planted by a community that cares deeply and acts boldly. We opened Carruthers Nature Preserve to the public and moved forward on transformative restoration efforts at Skokie River Nature Preserve, Mello’s Preserve at Westfork Savanna, Greene Nature Preserve, and West Skokie Nature Preserve. We also welcomed a meaningful new conservation easement in Lake Bluff and honored our history with our newest purchase: Hawk Meadow, a long-sought gem on the Middlefork, home to rare savanna and meadow species. It was a privilege to witness the protection of another conservation dream in the Middlefork. Behind these milestones are stories: of our Indigenous partners collaborating on the next phase of restoring coastal bluffs, of students exploring the Arctic watershed through our Center for Conservation Leadership (CCL) program, of neighbors

discovering vernal pools for the first time, and of volunteers whose steady hands ensure our preserves remain wild and welcoming. These stories are not just a celebration of our progress—they are a call to keep going. We believe experiences with nature transform hearts and minds, and ultimately shape stewards for a lifetime. Lake Forest Open Lands’ legacy is rooted in action and relationships. We continue to grow our community conservation approach: advising local homeowners on native landscapes, expanding accessible trails and ecological literacy, and deepening partnerships across generations and geographies. Our new welcoming website and the soon-to-come expanded community center reflect our belief that conservation is not something we protect from people, but with them. Nature’s resilience is echoed in your support. Whether planting trees with us in Waukegan, attending Bagpipes & Bonfire , or contributing to our capital effort, you help us live out our founding promise, to preserve and pass forward the wild and special places that define our region.

As I look ahead, I carry with me each moment of awe, each conversation, each act of care for the land. Together, we are not just managing landscapes. We are building a culture of hope and belonging. I often say that our wild and special places are not merely where we go, but part of who we are. This year reaffirmed that truth in every way. LIFE DIRECTORS SHAPING THE FUTURE OF LFOLA

TIMM REYNOLDS’ many contributions to Lake Forest Open Lands Association (LFOLA) over the years have been invaluable. He joined the LFOLA board as a Governor in 2008, and in 2014 he was elected as a Director. Timm served as an outstanding Chair from 2016-2019 and was instrumental in the land transfer of McCormick Ravine with the City of Lake Forest. Legacy Campaign. Timm’s enthusiasm for LFOLA helped us achieve our milestone goals. Many of our key gifts were as a direct result of Timm’s personal relationships. As a Development Committee member, he signs many nudge notes in his beautiful script which are included in annual appeal letters. Timm is incredibly thoughtful and a true gentleman! In so many ways, Timm embodies the true passion of our organization. His strong voice and collegial candor when commenting on organization matters is highly respected, including by our most cherished supporters and public officials. His unwavering commitment to our mission and work has long been reflected with his dedication and support for Lake Forest Open Lands and the land we cherish. For that, we thank him for inspiring all of us to do better.

GEORGE COVINGTON has been an active Director for many years—he is known as a conservation legal eagle extraordinaire in Lake Forest, throughout Illinois, and across the country. He is highly respected by all, and he earned Lake Forest Open Lands’ highest honor, the Savanna Conservator’s Award in 2023. George was appointed Life Director in May of this year. George’s tireless contributions to the organization over the years have been invaluable. He joined the Lake Forest Open Lands board as Secretary in 1984. George has had a front row seat with all LFOLA’s land acquisitions—and has been a steadfast and patient legal counsel. George shared in a recent history project, “Well,
