NYC Health + Hospitals Sets New 5-Year Strategic Goals: Part 2

Last week in The INSIDER we highlighted the first five of our NYC Health + Hospitals systemwide goals. If you missed it, you can catch up here. This week we look at goals 2 through 10 which feature housing more patients, introducing our patients and staff to healthier lifestyles, and crucial upgrades to our facilities and our payroll system.

House 3,000 patients

Why this is important We can’t provide the best care to New Yorkers if they don’t have a roof over their heads. Stable, safe housing is fundamental to overall good health. Our Housing for Health initiative offers housing supports for our patients and their families who need both care and a home. How we will do it

NYC Health + Hospitals Housing for Health has several initiatives to improve access to permanent housing for patients experiencing homelessness. These include housing navigation support; medical respite; affordable housing on hospital property and social service support for patients in permanent housing. We also collaborate with government partners, community-based organizations, funders and housing developers. How we will measure success We will work closely with facilities and providers to identify and refer patients who will benefit from our new Housing and Location Placement Services program. Patients will receive one-on-one support throughout their housing journey to a permanent home that meets their needs. We will leverage our land to assure the creation of 650 new affordable and supportive homes in the next 5 years. When patients leave our respite care we will make sure they are permanently housed after discharge whenever possible.

Introduce more New Yorkers to lifestyle medicine Why this is important

Lifestyle habits such as healthy eating, being physically active, and getting adequate sleep go a long way to help prevent and treat type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and other common conditions. Lifestyle medicine programs support patients in making behavior changes while also addressing their needs, such as access to healthy foods. This can make a lasting difference in the health of our communities.

How we will do it In addition to our existing program at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, we will launch lifestyle medicine programs at 6 additional NYC Health + Hospitals facilities covering all 5 NYC boroughs. At each site, interdisciplinary teams of doctors, nurse practitioners, registered dietitians, health coaches, community health workers, psychologists, program coordinators, and an exercise trainer will work together to support patients. The programs will also offer monthly produce deliveries, Health Bucks (coupons for farmers’ markets), cooking videos, cookbooks, and resistance bands for strength training. NYC Health + Hospitals staff will also receive support on lifestyle change, including free plant-based jumpstart programs, webinars, cooking demos, and continuing education courses. How we will measure success When our seven lifestyle medicine programs are up and running, we plan to have at least 5000 lifestyle medicine visits per year, serving diverse communities throughout NYC. We’ll also offer two healthy eating jumpstart programs each year for staff, along with regular livestreamed cooking demonstrations using affordable, accessible ingredients to make delicious plant-based meals! Upgrade aging infrastructure and medical equipment to make our system more resilient, secure and sustainable. Why this is important

NYC Health + Hospitals facilities are among the oldest in the city and nation. Most of our buildings were built to care standards of another era. But we also have the best clinicians, expertise, innovations, and mission! We need to bring our physical plant up to the same standards that our clinicians provide in the treatment of our patients. Upgraded facilities will improve patient outcomes and protect us from nature’s challenges such as pandemics and extreme weather events related to climate change.

How we will do it NYC Health + Hospitals receives regular capital improvement funding from our city, state and federal government partners. We are also working hard to secure funding from public and private grants and philanthropic sources. Master planning efforts have begun at a few facilities and are gradually being rolled out to others to develop a comprehensive plan not just for each campus but for the entire system. These plans are a combination of new buildings, replacement buildings and renovation of existing buildings. How we will measure success Upgrading our facilities will be a long and expensive process. The best measure of success will be the health of the communities we serve. We will collect real-time data about the volume of patients that enter our doors and how quickly they return to their regular lives after being treated by our amazing clinicians. Healthier buildings will contribute to healthier people. Meet the Federal Government’s 2030 carbon goal by reducing waste and improving energy efficiency Why this is important

9

Although we specialize in keeping people healthy, the health care sector has historically been a major polluter, churning out more than 4.4% of global and 8.5% of U.S. carbon emissions that contribute to climate change. We will be a leader in changing that, for the health of the planet and the health of our communities.

We will transition into a low carbon and climate resilient health system which will minimize negative impacts on the environment and restore and improve it to protect the health and well-being of our communities and future generations. How we will do it We will use less energy, generate less waste, emit fewer pollutants, and implement more resilient projects. We will also work with local and federal government entities to obtain additional funding to strengthen our facilities to improve their climate resilience, particularly from sea level rise, heavy rainstorm events, heat waves and power outages How we will measure success We joined the Federal Government in signing a Climate Pledge in May 2022. Our success will be defined by how well we are progressing toward meeting the specific

metrics identified in that pledge, such as reducing operational carbon emissions by 50% by 2030. We will create an executive level position to lead our decarbonization efforts and report our progress. Upgrade and roll out new payroll and scheduling system. Why this is important

10

This is an easy one! Getting an accurate paycheck on time is imperative. For too long we have been relying on an outdated payroll system that hasn’t kept up with the efficiency and speed of automated technology. How we will do this An expert team comprised of Finance, Human Resources, Nursing and EITS staff are collaborating to develop a new system that will make payroll and scheduling seamless and user friendly to employees.

We are currently working with industry professionals to design and implement the new system. We allocated fourteen months to thoroughly test the new system to make sure all of our complex and diverse union rules are working perfectly. How we will measure success We will train every NYC Health + Hospitals employee on a new payroll platform called MyTime and will see improvement in time it takes from “punch-to-pay”, and a reduction in employee payroll inquiries as measures of success.
