AF&PA Announces 2024 Award Winning Sustainability Projects
• Innovation in Sustainability: Sonoco, “EnviroFlex Paper ULT 2.0” • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: “DS Smith Packaging Lebanon Indiana Interpreters Program” Visit afandpa.org for videos of these award-winning projects. “I commend this year’s winners for their creativity in im- plementing new strategies that will make our paper indus- try stronger,” said Howard Coker, AF&PA Board Chair and President and CEO of Sonoco Products Company. “These awards truly embody our Better Practices, Better Planet 2030 goals – both the progress we have made to date and what we are striving to achieve in the future.” Better Practices, Better Planet is one of the longest standing sustainability initiatives for a US manufacturing industry. Since 1998, it was required that AF&PA members commit to environment, health, and safety (EHS) princi- ples. In 2011, AF&PA launched Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 sustainability goals. Having met or achieved most of the goals for 2020, AF&PA is now in its second generation of sustainability goals: Better Practices, Better Planet 2030. The 2024 Sustainability Award winners were selected by a diverse judging panel of sustainability experts from the US Environmental Protection Agency, GreenBlue, Wis- consin Institute for Sustainable Technology, Clemson Uni- versity, Resources for the Future and the National Associ- ation of Manufacturers.
The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) an- nounced its Better Practices, Better Planet 2030 Sustain- ability Award winners. The awards recognize exemplary sustainability programs and initiatives in the paper and wood products manufacturing. “Sustainability is foundational for our members and our awards program reflect that,” said AF&PA President and CEO Heidi Brock. “These award-winning projects demon- strate sustainability leadership and innovation in action. We are proud to recognize real-world examples of how our forest and paper industry sustainability goals come to life.” AF&PA Congratulates the following winners: • Leadership in Sustainability – Circular Value Chain: Clearwater Paper Company, “Optimizing SBS paper- board to better support a Circular Economy” • Leadership in Sustainability – Water Management: Domtar, “Making a Splash with Water Conservation” • Leadership in Sustainability – Greenhouse Gas Reduc- tions: Green Bay Packaging, “Greenhouse Gas Reduc- tion-Green Bay Mill Project” • Leadership in Sustainability – Resilient U.S. Forests: “International Paper and The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s Forestland Stewards Partnership”
Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.
