PACK EXPO: Record Attendance, Trend-Setting Package Solutions BY SIMONA GEORGESCU As someone who has been attending PACK EXPO for nearly two de- cades, the scale and impact of this year’s event in Chicago underscored just how far the packaging industry has come—and where it’s headed. My first PACK EXPO was in 2005, and since then, the event has more than doubled in size to accommodate rapid growth in exhibitors and innovations across packaging, automation, and processing. This year, I was struck by how much larger and busier the event felt. Running between North, South, West, and Lakeside halls, I can honestly say I put in the miles.
IP, DS Smith Merger To Close Q1 2025
Memphis, Tennessee based International Paper announced expectations to finalize its combination with DS Smith in the first quarter of 2025 along with third-quarter earnings ex- ceeding expectations and closure of a mill in Georgetown, South Carolina. Highlights from third quarter results in- clude net earnings of $150 million; adjusted operating earnings of $153 million, cash pro- vided by operations of $521 million with $161 million returned to shareholders in dividends. “Higher prices across the portfolio, includ- ing benefits from our packaging go-to-market strategy were supported by a moderately im- proving box demand environment. We also had higher operating costs and lower vol- umes due to seasonality and commercial ac- tions to improve profitability,” said Chairman and CEO Andy Silvernail. Silvernail said IP is laser-focused on deliv- ering profitable growth as the low-cost, most reliable and innovative sustainable packaging solutions provider. “We are deploying an 80/20 approach to strategically align resources to become ex- cellent with our customers, while reducing CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

I’m confident that our transformational journey will unlock substantial value at IP and strengthen the company for our employees, customers and shareholders.” In its Industrial Packaging business segment, IP report- ed third-quarter operating profit (loss) of $197 million com- pared with $291 million in the second quarter of 2024. In North America, business segment operating profit (loss) decreased as higher sales prices for boxes and contain- erboard were more than offset by seasonally lower sales volumes, higher operating costs, and higher planned out- age costs, IP said. IP also announced the permanent closure of its George- town, South Carolina mill. The mill will shut down in stages with a full closure expected by the end of 2024. The Georgetown mill produces approximately 300,000 tons of fluff pulp designed for a range of consumer appli- cations from baby diapers to incontinence products. GCF plans to retain 100 percent of the mill’s fluff pulp capacity by transferring production to other mills and further reduc- ing the IP’s exposure to commodity pulp grades, IP said. The mill also produces uncoated freesheet papers that it sells to Sylvamo pursuant to a strategic contract, which IP and Sylvamo have mutually agreed to terminate as of De- cember 31. In total, 526 hourly employees and 148 salaried em- ployees will be impacted and all employees will be offered severance benefits, outplacement services and access to mental health resources, IP said.

Prestige paperboard, cold foiled, and offset printed with four color pro- cess and PMS inks, in-line with UV matte and UV high gloss spot coating. The structural design incorporates an integrated inner cell that se- curely holds the contents and creates a three-dimensional shadow box effect within an arched front window. The standard straight tuck carton incorporates slit lock closures with feet on the bottom panel for added stability. The graphic design features a striking silver front panel with color accents on the front arched insert and on the top, side, and rear panels. Overprinting PMS colors over silver cold foil differentiates all four gift sets, adds distinction, and reinforces StriVectin as a prestige skincare brand. The overall matte coating provides a striking contrast to the UV gloss spot coating applied over the product photos. Embossed logos on the front and side panels add depth and dimen- sion to the design along with an appealing tactile quality that promotes consumer interaction. Diamond won an Excellence Award: Sustainability in the Self-Promo- tional category for its 2024 “Suitable for Framing” corporate calendar. The calendar reproduces Impressionist masterpieces in a gilded gold frame enclosing works of art from Vincent van Gogh, Édouard Manet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Henri-Edmond Cross.

Abbott Action Invests In Valco Melton ClearVision Inspection Technologies Abbott Action, a premier provider of corrugated packag- ing and POP displays, announced the recent installation of new ClearVision systems at their plant in Attleboro, Massa- chusetts. This collaboration marks a significant milestone as Abbott Action becomes the first independent corrugat- ed plant in the Northeast to install Valco Melton’s state-of- the-art PrintChek and GapChek systems. With these systems and Abbott’s proactive approach to quality assurance, they can now guarantee 100 percent in- spection of the print and manufacturers gaps on every box and sheet, making it possible for Abbott Action to deliver nothing but perfect boxes to their customers. Valco Melton’s PrintChek and GapChek systems rep- resent the pinnacle of vision-based inspection technology
GapChek, implemented on Abbott Action’s Isowa Fal- con, focuses on measuring and ensuring the accuracy of every manufacturer’s gap. GapChek straddles the dis- charge conveyor after the counter ejector, employing two cameras that automatically move across the conveyor to find and image the finished manufacturer’s joints. These images are then analyzed, measured, and clas- sified as passing or defective using ClearVision’s pro- prietary AI process, making GapChek a powerful tool to provide near real-time feedback to operators as well as sorting individual defects from the production stream. A visual statistical process control (SPC) chart and measure- ments of CP and CPK values are also displayed on the 22” touch screen HMI. Abbott Action has also implemented Valco Melton’s GlueChek system, further solidifying their commitment to delivering flawless products. GlueChek, installed right af- ter the gluing station, utilizes advanced camera technolo- gy to analyze glue patterns, ensuring that no gluing prob- lems make it to the customers. The system takes a picture of every glue tab, meticu- lously examining the glue pattern for any defects such as, missing glue, glue volume, glue position, and more. When a gluing problem is detected, GlueChek immediately noti- fies operators through an alarm, marks the defective box, and saves an image of the gluing issue. These systems give Abbott’s leaders the confidence and data they need to deliver quality boxes to their cus- tomers, even at the highest production rates, and with stringent demands from their customers. The implementation of Valco Melton’s PrintChek, Gap- Chek, and GlueChek systems has significantly enhanced Abbott Action’s production capabilities and quality assur- ance processes. The impact of this investment is best de- scribed by the company’s leadership: “Abbott Action has been working with Valco Melton for years, we truly enjoy their support of our organization. As we have grown our business, the quality we deliver to our customers is paramount. It is exciting to utilize the cut- ting-edge technology that not only creates a more efficient production environment, but it also allows us to deliver the highest standard to our customers,” says Sam Abbott, CEO Abbott Action. This underscores the strategic importance of the Clear- Vision systems in Abbott Action’s commitment to deliv- ering superior quality products to their customers. The partnership between Abbott Action and Valco Melton demonstrates how cutting-edge technology can drive in- novation and excellence in the corrugated packaging in- dustry. Valco Melton is a provider of adhesive application equipment and quality assurance systems for the corru- gated industry. Their ClearVision suite of inspection equip- ment offers comprehensive solutions for box manufactur- ing process inspection. Abbott Action is a third-generation family business, founded in 1935.
for the corrugated industry. PrintChek, installed on Abbott Action’s Apstar rotary die cutter, is positioned after the last print down and before the die cut section. PrintChek’s camera and lighting modules are enclosed in a robust housing designed with the corrugated environ- ment in mind. A high-flow, low-pressure blower supplied with the system, provides air across the plenum, keeping lighting and cameras free of dust, ink, and debris. This thoughtful design also features a shutter mechanism that closes and protects the lights and camera lenses during maintenance and wash-up. The system utilizes a series of color line scan camer- as for full sheet print inspection on FlexoFolderGluers and DieCutters. PrintChek images and analyzes every sheet to detect defects, including issues with print-to-sheet, print- to-print, color, barcodes, spots, hickeys, blemishes, and other non-print-related board damage. The system’s full- sheet inspection capabilities allow operators to run at full speed with 100 percent confidence. GapChek Screen installed at the machine discharge

Make a stronger, lighter and more sustainable corrugated blank using less glue by implementing a “brick” style pattern developed by Baumer hhs. This pattern creates a stronger bond using less glue. Our new all-electric PX 1000 applicators with over a billion cycle life can easily apply the pattern with clean cutoff and accurate placement. The PGD 1000 sensor is there to show your customer that every box was properly glued so you’ll never end up on some gag reel. You can be the star with The CorrBox solution from Baumer hhs.
PX 1000 Cold Glue Applicator • Extremely fast and powerful closing force means no drips or tailing so your first box is a good box. • Strong armature activation easily handles viscosity fluctuations and will work with a large variety of adhesives. • Fast action coil means you can now stitch your beads at higher running speeds lowering adhesive consumption up to 70% and improving board output.
PGD 1000 Monitoring Sensor • Measure the glue proximity to the edge of the tab and avoid squeeze-out so you deliver an accurately glued box every time. • The printing on the carton does not effect the hybrid sensor’s ability to read the bead. Black, white, plaid or polka dot, the sensor is not bothered, so neither are you. • No UV additives needed for detection saves you money, time and effort.

Since 1998, it was required that AF&PA members commit to environment, health, and safety (EHS) princi- ples. In 2011, AF&PA launched Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 sustainability goals. Having met or achieved most of the goals for 2020, AF&PA is now in its second generation of sustainability goals: Better Practices, Better Planet 2030. The 2024 Sustainability Award winners were selected by a diverse judging panel of sustainability experts from the US Environmental Protection Agency, GreenBlue, Wis- consin Institute for Sustainable Technology, Clemson Uni- versity, Resources for the Future and the National Associ- ation of Manufacturers.

Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.
