The History of New Year’s Resolutions AN INTERESTING BACKSTORY Every Jan. 1, when the ball drops, many

This took place during Akitu, a religious festival that lasted 12 days. They also made certain promises to their gods to return any objects they borrowed and to pay any debts they owed. These promises were the first “resolutions” we have today. If the Babylonians were to keep their promises, the gods bestowed favors upon them the next year. If they did not keep their word, they fell out of the gods’ favor, and this was not a good place to be. In ancient Rome, in 46 B.C., Julius Caesar established Jan. 1 as the beginning of the new year. The month of January was named after Janus, a two-faced god who was able to look backward into the past year and ahead into the future. As a tradition, the Romans would offer sacrifices to the gods and promise “good conduct” in the new year. Today, we still make promises in the form of resolutions to be the best versions of ourselves. The trick is to avoid falling into the majority and actually achieve those goals!

begin their New Year’s resolutions. Some of the more popular resolutions are centered around fitness and losing weight, while others set out to learn a new skill or to get organized. However, a study published in the Journal of Psychology shows that only 46% of people actually stick with their resolutions.

But where did the idea of setting resolutions each New Year come from?

The custom of setting goals and resolutions on the first day of the year has been around for centuries, but it hasn’t always looked the same as it does in 2022. Roughly 4,000 years ago, ancient Babylonians were the first to make New Year’s resolutions and celebrate the new year. For them, the new year began in the middle of March when crops were planted. During this celebration, the Babylonians crowned a new king or reaffirmed their loyalty to the king who would stay in power.
