be able to see much change with the first drop or two, but I can, as I look straight down into the glass. As I put more of the alcohol into the glass, you can see that a change is taking place. This boy’s head is becoming cloudy. His brains are being affected. Look! The white of the egg looks as if it were conked! Whiskey gradually does to a person’s brain what this alcohol has done to the white of this egg—it coagulates, or hardens it. The other glass does not accept the alcohol, for it is protected by the lid. The only safe way to keep the head clear is to accept Christ as your Saviour, and then to let Him give you power to resist temptation. Remember the words of the Bible: “ Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing” (Judg. 13:4). Outline and Exposition I. T he O ccasion (1-4) T HE PHARISEES, together with certain of the scribes, came from Jerusalem to investigate the work Jesus was doing. Evidently, they came with no intention or desire to profit from His teaching, but merely to find something with which they might find fault. They found the disciples of our Lord eating “ with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen hands.” Those who come to Christ, or to the Bible, usually find exactly what they seek, whether blessing to meet their needs or ground for their fault finding. Pharisees would never eat their food without first washing their hands [R. V., “ diligently,” margin, “ up to the elbow” ]. So fearful were they of any contamination from uncleanness that they took extra pre cautions to avoid it, even extending their washings to all their implements, cups, pots, vessels, and tables. Whatever value there might be in washing the hands before eat ing, there was nothing in the law which made the practice obligatory; but the Pharisees made it a legal religious require ment among them and would force it upon all others. II. T he C omplaint (5) Without speaking directly to the disciples whom they found eating with “ defiled” hands, the Pharisees took their complaint directly to Jesus. Thus they would hold Him to be responsible for what His dis ciples did. They thought that any one who would dare to live contrary to the “ tradi tion of the elders” must certainly be an object of the wrath of heaven. This being so, they were quick to enter their accusa tion against Jesus Himself. The unholy and worldly lives of some professing Christians are today held up to scorn as though the Lord and His teachings were in some way the causes of such lives. The cavilers seldom pick out a good example of Christianity against whom to bring complaint.

boy had an offer which nearly every boy and girl has sometime in life— the offer of a drink of whiskey. Because .this boy had not accepted Christ as his Saviour, it was easy for him to yield to temptation. When you study science in school, your teacher will talk to you about protoplasm, the living substance in the cells of our bodies. Undoubtedly he will tell you that when he shows you the white of an egg, he is showing you the thing that is most like the protoplasm in the human body. It would be impossible for me to bring living brain cells to show to you, of course, so I am bringing something that chemists say is quite like what is in the body’s cells. I want to put a few drops of this alcohol in the glass to show you what happened to this unsaved boy’s brain. You may not Mark 7:1 Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem. 2 And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with un- washen hands, they found fault. 3 For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. 4 And when they come from the market, ex cept they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brazen vessels, and of tables. 5 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with un- washen hands? 6 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoreth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. 7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teach ing for doctrines the commandments of men. 8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. 9 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. 10 For Moses said, Honor thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death : 11 But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by m e; he shall be free. 12 And ye suffer him no more to do aught for his father or his mother; 13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye. Golden Text: “ This people honoreth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me” (Mk. 7:6).'. : Devotional Reading: Psalm 24:1-6. BLACKBOARD LESSON
