Complaining is more than simply impart ing our troubles to others. Complaint savors always of a little bad temper, and a slight ly vindictive spirit. Contented with their lot, saints cease to desire what has been withheld from them. If one has asked and not received what he thought was needful,, why be disquieted? If it were really neces-S,; sary, God would quickly provide means to obtain it. Have we not Christ’s own words? “ Your Father knoweth what things ye have need of.”— Missionary Workers’ Herald. ' “And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul” (Psa. 106:15). Perhaps leanness comes to our souls just because we forfeit something of that fine trust which enables a truly surrendered man to say, “ I’d rather go in the dark with God than go alone in the light.” W e may crave for things which are right and legi timate, but our very craving may make us rebellious against God, who appears to be denying us. Even should we get what we crave, we may find that it was the worst thing that could happen to us, for with the granting of the request there may come a leanness into the soul. Happy, thrice happy, is the man who can say of God, “ His love denies me nothing His wisdom deemeth good!”— Sunday School Times. God promises an all sufficiency of grace. He is able to supply that which is needed for the end required. The root of the word “sufficient” embodies the idea of “pro tection by means of a barrier.” The word may be used of the strength of a wind that baffles all further progress. So “ God is able” to raise a barrier in order to pre vent the advance of that which would harm us. This sufficient protection of the grace of God makes us able for all the demands of life. It removes nerve strain and dread of failure, for “ God is able” to make us equal to all the burden, all the toil, all the sorrow, all the disappointment, all the loss that life may bring.— From The Conquest of Life by W . Mallis* MARCH 11 Positive and Negative Blessing “ That no man put a stumblingblock . . . in his brother’s way” (Rom. 14:13). Too little, too little, will there appear in that day of any positive achievements of ours for God and His truth, propor tioned to our opportunity. But, at least, let it not be found that when, some fellow creature was inclining to ruin, any frivolity or unconcern of ours made his downward way easier and swifter; or, if a soul was struggling with light and victory, that our faithlessness discouraged him, our incon sistencies confused him, our self-love drew him back.— B ish op H u n t in g d o n . *Copyrigkted, 1936, by the Bible Institute Col- portage Association of Chicago, reprinted with express permission. washing incident was to teach the self- seeking disciples a lesson in humility, we are warranted in finding in it a still more profound significance. Is it not a living picture of the redemptive ministry of our Lord? Just what, after all, was Christ’s real mission on earth—the purpose of His coming into the world? Was He but the last of the great Hebrew prophets? Was He simply the finest flower of the religious genius of His nation? . . . The Bible teach es that Jesus Christ left a glory-lit throne to wash a sin-stained world. In the life and death of Jesus, God revealed Himself as redemptive grace. Above all else Jesus was— and is—the Redeemer of mankind. — C. N o r m a n B a r t le t t . MARCH 7 Unlimited “All are yours; And ye are Christ’s ; and Christ is God’s” (1 Cor.- 3:22, 23). All grace is thine, all promises, all power— Omnipotence itself, if there is need; Who leans on man, leans on a broken reed; Who leans on God is conqueror every hour. All heaven is thine, up to its highest throne; The harp, the allelujahs, and the psalm, The robes all white, the golden crown, the palm— All, all are thine, since Christ is ever thine. —Alliance Weekly. MARCH 8 A Mark o f Holiness “Do all things without murmurings and disputings” (Phil. 2:14). One great characteristic of holiness is never to be exacting, never to complain.
