Con Edison. Not only was his cooking delicious, he made sure it was healthy. When I was a child, my dad was always there for me. He was my go-to person for problems or advice. He never
My dad, Danny, was born and raised in Yonkers, New York. He was one of five kids, and he grew up with four younger sisters, two of which are twins only 11 months younger than him! A year after graduating high school, my dad enlisted in the Navy in 1966. He was stationed to serve on USS Guam LPH9, where he worked in the mess hall before becoming the ship’s tailor. The ship’s main
asked for anything in return, and he never hesitated to give of himself — this wonderful quality has never changed. I decided to go back to school later in life, approximately four plus years ago. Going back to school made mine and my husband’s lives crazy. At times, it felt like we weren’t able to spend as much time with our kids as we wanted to. However, my dad stepped up to help out. There were days when he was at our house until two in the morning so that I could study. My dad even bought a minivan so he could drag his grandkids to sports, doctor appointments, and school functions. I wouldn’t have been able to juggle my personal life and school without the help of my dad and mom. My dad is a man who can roll with the punches. He has survived colon cancer twice. I remember the first time he told me that he had been diagnosed with cancer. I cried when he broke the news, but he said, “Dawn, there are worse things in life. This will be handled; it will be fine.” Even in one of the most daunting times of his life, my dad stayed strong for everyone. As a person, my dad is kind, selfless, and compassionate. He’s the person who taught me how to see things from other people’s perspectives, and lives his life with respect, responsibility, and reasoning every day. Not only has he passed the 3 R’s on to me, but he also instills them into his grandsons. Beyond that, he teaches all of us to let go of things we have no control over and to practice forgiveness. I thank God for my dad every day. Thank you, Dad, for everything you do. Without your help, I could not be where I am today. Thank you for your constant love and support. I can’t imagine my life without you. Happy Father’s Day, I love you. Dawn
purpose was to stay in the Caribbean to transport Marines and helicopters. In 1966, the space shuttle Gemini 11 came back to Earth after a three-day mission, and the USS Guam LPH9 picked up astronauts Charles Conrad and Richard Gordon after their capsule landed in the ocean. My dad had the opportunity to meet both astronauts, and it is one of his favorite memories from his military service. My dad met my mom when he was 16. They were married in 1968 after my dad came home from the military, and have been together ever since. Two years later, they had my older brother, Danny, then me and then my younger brother David. He is now the proud grandpa of 6 grandsons ranging from 3-17 years old. Before enlisting in the Navy, my dad worked for Con Edison, an energy company, and he was able to return to the job after two years of active duty. Eventually, he became an emergency dispatcher, and his career with the company lasted 41 years.
My dad is a renaissance man. Not only is he handy but is also an amazing cook. My dad worked shifts at Con Edison, so before he left for his evening shifts, he would make extra meals for the family during the morning so that all my mom had to do was heat them up. He not only cooked for us, but he loved to cook for the guys at
