He has never been known to lose a vessel, Little or big on life’s boisterous sea, For He not only knows the risks and quicksands, But where the deep, quiet waters be. —o— February 13 —“I know whom I have be lieved and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed un to him against that day" (2 Tim. 1 :12). Many people are ignorant o f the faith which believes God is able to look after, protect, provide for and guard His own redeemed ones unto the end! They are full of fears and misery, conjecturing they may slip—they might deny God—the devil is ready to seize them—they may not keep true to the end—and perhaps after all they will get lost! They only see the dark cloud that rises from the va pors o f their own nature. They miss the silver lining of the Sun of Righteousness, that rainbow of promise, which shows that God is the “upholder of all things by the word o f his power.” If they will only loose the reins of their own miser able weakness, and put them into God’s almighty hands, they will find Him “able to keep us from falling and to present us faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy.” We hear some one saying, sometimes, “If I came to Christ I could not keep firm, I could not stand.” And neither could we, but the faith we need to exercise, is in God’s keeping, not our own, as the old Scotch woman said, “ It’s not my grip o f Him, but it is God’s grip of me, that keeps me.”— Faith. • —o— February 14 —“She called his name Ben-oni [the son of my sorrow ]: but his father called him Benjamin [the son of the right hand]” (Genesis 35:18). The sorrow and suffering that cost Ra chel her life became, to the one she loved most, his right hand of comfort and strength. That is exactly what God would have me do, or let Him do, with every sorrow and suffering that comes into my life. Its purpose is not to break down, but to lift up. If I see in it only an ex pression of God’s love, as it is, every ex perience of suffering may be turned into a strengthening right hand for others and for myself. I am not above my Master: and He, the Lord Jesus Christ, became through His sorrow and suffering unto death the Right Hand of all humanity. Many another, following in His footsteps and in His strength, has, by life laid down, lifted many up. Every one is o f fered this highest privilege, which was also Christ’s .—Messages for the Morning Watch. Sometimes God leads us through the vale o f sorrow, And darkness hides His face. But He is there, unchanging, and the morrow Will surely bring fresh grace. And by and by we, too, will understand Why we have felt the pressure of His hand. —o— February 15 —“For . by faith ye stand” (2 Cor. 1:24). Some people’s faith is wonderful at the commencement of their life’s journey, but as they go on and meet with many dis couragements and trials, they faint and

ment, it proclaims both the destiny of those without, and the sufficiency o f those within—for it declares their satisfying fellowship with the Lord Himself, in whose secret they dwell. They are, it is true, shut up to Himself alone, but only to find in Him the supply o f every need, and the deep satisfaction o f their every instinct. And in that holy separation, be hind the shut door, they are increasingly persuaded that He is able to keep all that they have committed to Him, until the assuaging of the Flood and the breaking of the Day.— Rev. J. Stuart Holden, D.D., M.A. —o— February 11 —“ The Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out o f thy country . . . unto a land that I will shew thee" (Gen. 12 : 1 ). The separation from the old life must be thorough. Only those who are com pletely transplanted can be fully blessed; and only those who are fully blessed can be made a blessing. Such transplanting involves the grave. If you are to become one with Him, admitted into His coun sels, sharing His secrets, you must be planted together with Jesus in the like ness of His resurrection. All the ten drils of your being must be fastened to Him. Three wonderful things are said of Abraham. He went out not knowing whither. He believed God not knowing how God would fulfill His Word. He obeyed God not knowing why he was bid den to offer the child of promise on the altar of sacrifice. Because God had found a man who could do this, He laid in Abraham the foundations for the whole structure of revelation. If God calls you, never mind the whither. If God promises what seems to your reason the impossible, never mind the how. As Luther used to say, “We must learn to crucify the how.” If God commands what, from the stand point of reason, seems unreasonable and even cruel, never mind the why. “Let Him lead thee blindfold onwards, Love needs not to know; Children whom the Father leadeth, Ask not where they go. Though the path be all unknown, Over moors and mountains lone.” —/. Gregory Mantle, D.D. —o— ' February 12 —“ T h e m e e ek will he guide” (Psa. 25:9). No ancient pillar ever made the way more plain to those who watched it for guidance than does God’s providence make the path o f duty in common days for those who truly acknowledge God and desire His guidance. It is not because we cannot know God’s way that we do not see it, but because we want instead to take our own way. There is no use in our looking into our Lord’s face and asking, “What now, dear Master?” if we do not mean to take the path He marks out. We must have the spirit o f obedience if we are to receive the divine direction. “Not my will, but thine,” must be the prayer of our heart, cost what it may to sur render our own and take God’s. — Selected. —o— What is the use o f the skilful Pilot, If, when the storms and billows roar, You do not resign to Him the rudder, And trust Him to bring you safe to shore ?
