The Mormons Today ’T ’HE United States Bureau of the Cen- sus in its recent report of “The Lat ter Day Saints” in America states that this sect, founded by Joseph Smith in 1830 at Fayette, Seneca County, New York, has now 1,867 churches with 606,- 561 members. Of this number 592 churches and 64,367 are members of the- “ Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.” One-fifth of the members are under thirteen years of age. The expenditures of both branches of the church in 1926 amounted to $3,095,895 and the pupils in Sunday schools num bered 209,593. The growth o f these churches from 1906 to 1916 showed an 80 per cent in crease but from 1916 to 1926 it was only 20 per cent. The annual expenditures, however, between 1916 and 1926 increased from $949,104 to $3,095,895, or over two hundred per cent! O f the income re ported $463,749, or about one-fifth, was for missions and benevolences. The Mormons of the larger Utah branch report churches in forty-five states, the largest- number of organiza tions being: Utah (544), Idaho (270), Arizona (58), California (48) and Wy oming (45). Foreign hiissionary work is conducted by them in Great Britain and Ireland,' all the countries of northern Europe, Turkey, South Africa, Mexico, South America, Australia, New Zealand and the Islands of the Pacific. They re port 1,045 missionaries with 6,735 native helpers, 469 mission churches and 53,089 communicants.—■ The Missionary Review of the World. .$!*• The Hereafter Some one suggested to us once that the popularity of services conducted by many irresponsible teachers is due to the fact that these men and women generally major on eschatological or prophetic sub jects, in which people are intensely in terested in spite of this pleasure-loving and materialistic age. We wonder if there was more than a grain of truth in that suggestion. A study of the church announcements in Saturday newspapers reveals that in many theaters and halls there are repre sentatives of every cult under heaven, and that their subjects frequently have to do with the other world as it is or as it is going to be. The followers of Pastor Russell, the spiritualists, and many less widely known sects are talking on these subjects all the time. Vast numbers of people hear these teachers and are misled by their teaching. With death staring us in the face and with many loved ones already in the other world, we would be more or less than human if every restatement of the doctrine of the future life did not quicken our interest and attract our attention. It is the fashion and folly of some ministers to sneer at other-worldism and the doc trine of the future state. If men cannot hear the truth about these things in their own churches they will be tempted to fol low certain false teachers who dwell con stantly on these things. The problems o f the great future to ward which we are hastening were dis cussed day after day by our Lord and His apostles. The preachers of the pres ent day may well afford to emulate their example.— Watchman-Examiner.
