Step 3: Measure for New Weatherstripping Measure the length of the door or window frame where you’ll be installing the new weatherstripping. Be sure to measure accurately, as gaps in the material can allow drafts to enter. Step 4: Cut the Weatherstripping Using your measurements, cut the new weatherstripping to the appropriate lengths. Most weatherstripping comes in a roll, and you can cut it with scissors or a utility knife. Be careful to avoid making the pieces too short. Step 5: Install the New Weatherstripping Now that you’ve prepped your materials, it’s time to install the new weatherstripping: For adhesive-backed weatherstripping: Peel off the backing and carefully press the weatherstripping into place along the edge of the door or window frame. Press firmly to ensure it sticks. For screw-in or nail-in types: Align the weatherstripping along the door or window frame and fasten it with screws or small nails. Make sure the weatherstripping creates a good seal but doesn’t make it difficult to open or close the door or window. Step 6: Test the Seal Once installed, close your door or window to check the seal. You should notice a tighter fit and no drafts. If there are still gaps, you may need to adjust the placement or add more weatherstripping. Bonus Tip: Regular Maintenance Weatherstripping can wear down over time, especially in high-traffic areas like doors. Check it annually and replace any sections that are damaged or no longer sealing effectively. By following these steps, you can keep your home warm, cut down on energy costs, and make sure your doors and windows are snug for the colder months ahead.
