Should You Include Salary Ranges in Your Job Descriptions?

Think back to the days when you were applying for jobs. It wasn’t super fun, was it? When job seekers are actively looking for jobs, they might read through hundreds of job descriptions each day. When reading job descriptions, what information do you think job seekers are looking for in a job description?

employers are listing salary ranges. In fact, here in Colorado, it’s state law that employers list a salary range for their job postings. What this means is that if you’re not listing a salary range for your job opportunities, then you’re putting yourself and your company at a disadvantage. Potential employees want to know what kind of income they can make. They need to know whether or not your position will ensure that they can take care of their families and support their lifestyles. “Excellent pay” is not a number that makes sense to a potential employee. It’s also subjective. Listing a reasonable range will help you attract qualified job applicants faster AND it will save you the awkward phone or in- person conversation of being way out of each other’s budget ballparks. Some employers worry that if they list the salary ranges for new positions online that current employees may get upset. Well, think about this: How will the current employee feel when they find out how much the new employee is making from the new employee, rather than from the owner of the company? Pretty upset, right? Listing salary ranges on job descriptions can help create transparency within your company. If a current employee sees a salary range listed for a similar position, this can create an opportunity for the employee to speak openly with the business owner. If these conversations do come up, the

Most job seekers will look for the following information:

1. What are the job qualifications? Am I qualified for this position? 2. What are the responsibilities of this role? 3. What benefits and perks is the company offering?

And absolutely…

business owner has a chance to explain the salary difference to the employee, whether it’s based on a set of skills that they are looking for in the new position or something else, and this can transform into a growth conversation with the employee. There’s no need to view a situation like this as a bad thing! Having open and honest conversations about money with your employees can help build trust, and can open the door for conversations about growth within the organization.

4. How much money can I make in this position?

Money isn’t everything ... but it’s pretty important!

No one wants to apply for a position that is keeping the salary a secret. Searching for a job can be exhausting. When applicants come across two job listings, one that lists the salary range, and one that does not, which do you think they’ll apply to first? The one that lists a concrete salary range! This takes the uncertainty out of the job application process and increases the chance that job applicants will apply for YOUR position. The reality is that many

5 Ways to Enhance Your Marketing by Taking Advantage of Summertime

For most of us, summers fly by extremely fast. For landscapers, summers can be so busy they might forget to take specific steps that will help their businesses thrive in the following seasons! Below are five tips for how you can enhance your marketing THIS summer and help you finish out the summer season strong. 1. Take photos of your finished projects —while they’re green! Customers want to see photos of beautiful finished projects! They want to imagine what your work could look like in their own backyard during the best time of year. Remember to capture high- quality photos of your work before the season ends. If the timing is right, consider hiring a professional photographer! 2. Capture video testimonials from your employees. You always have your smartphone on you, right? Use it at the job site to capture video testimonials from your employees! These videos can be used on social media, your website, and on job boards. 3. Beef up your career page and job boards. You can easily make a couple of small adjustments to your job postings during this time of year. Make sure to include the “What’s in it for me” in your job descriptions. Why should someone choose to

come work for you? What’s in it for them? What makes you special as an employer when compared to your competitors?

4. Share customer feedback with your team. Summertime is intense for landscape contractors! It’s hot and your employees are working hard out there. Boost employee morale by sharing positive feedback from clients! Did a customer share how happy they are with their project so far? Did they appreciate how friendly the crew was? Let your people know. 5. Subscribe to ‘The Landscaper’s Guide to Modern Sales and Marketing’ podcast. Some affordable decor, like wall art or small potted succulents, can spruce up your office without making a mess. If you’re looking to organize your space, consider buying desktop shelves to free up clutter. Then, you won’t have to leave your desk to stay in the zone! Look out for Apple and PC sales! Replacing your current technology can be expensive, but back- to-school sales are the perfect way to spare your wallet. Have an amazing computer already? You can still benefit majorly from staying tuned! During last year’s back-to-school sale, Apple offered 20% off their AppleCare+ service, which gives you two incidents of accidental damage protection every 12 months. Dropped your laptop or spilled coffee on it? They’ll fix it, no questions asked. Invest in the new office chair you’ve been wanting. Don’t sacrifice your posture just because you’re working from home. Whether remote working has turned into a permanent or a part-time solution for your job, you deserve an office chair that can help keep your back straight, preventing pain and slouching. Many big-box stores will be offering sales on office chairs, so take the opportunity to sit in a healthier way today — before the expensive holiday season rolls around! Just because you’re an adult doesn’t mean you can’t have the joy of back-to-school shopping too. We hope you treat yourself to something that’ll make your remote routine even better.

IS YOUR HOME OFFICE MISSING SOMETHING?

Top 3 Tips to Take Advantage of Back-to-School Deals

Everyone loves back-to-school season because of the shopping spree! Students can get tools they’ll actually use for the entire year while they’re on sale while saving a few extra dollars in the process. But you can get that very same feeling as an entrepreneur, too. Here’s how you can make the most of back-to-school deals this year for your home office. Upgrade your home office’s amenities. Are you a seltzer water fan? Every year, Amazon almost always has an “Off to College” sale, featuring various products that make dorm life a little bit easier and more convenient. If you want to do the same for your home office, look into a tabletop fridge — or an electric tea kettle, if tea is more your style.

Do you ever have a question you wish someone could answer for you, about how to run your landscaping business? While there’s a ton of great content on Google and YouTube and a ton of groups on Facebook and LinkedIn, it can sometimes take a lot of time to search through it all to find the good stuff. Prioritize Your Best (and WORST) Clients Using STACK

Do you ever have clients that are LOSING money? Are those clients super needy … maybe even rude to your staff?

Sorting your clients into these categories can help you realize how you need to prioritize different clients. This exercise will help you get really clear on which kinds of clients you should be focusing on and getting more of and which ones you need to focus on getting rid of. Hat tip to Wayne Herring for sharing this awesome process with me, which he learned from Anne Mayfield from Mayfield Consulting.

Not only can you lose money on those accounts, but they can also stress out your best employees and make them leave too.

At Ramblin Jackson, we use a proven process called STACK that can help prioritize your best — and worst — clients, so you can keep your team motivated working on the RIGHT accounts and generating profits.

WARNING: You might need to fire some clients after doing the STACK exercise!

STACK is an acronym:

ST ars: Your top 5% of customers. High-paying, great clients that you enjoy working with!

STACKing your clients helps you move toward working with more of your Hell Yes Customers. Working with more of your Hell Yes Customers will help you increase your profit and live a better lifestyle.

A dvancers: They’re growing and could become a star.

C ruisers: They’re paying you and you’re providing them with value, but they’re not super engaged. K illers: The profit and morale killers! Refund requesters ... Whiners ... LATE people ... Let’s fire them.

That’s what we’re all here for, right?
