Session : Featured Fireside Chat: Flourishing, Legacy, and the Developmental Journey Dr. Susanne Cook-Greuter What does it mean to flourish—not only at one moment in life, but across the full arc of human development? In this intimate fireside conversation, Dr. Susanne Cook-Greuter will explore how our understanding of identity, purpose, leadership, and wellbeing evolves as we move along the developmental curve. Drawing upon her pioneering research in adult and ego development, and in dialogue with the integral vision associated with Ken Wilber, the conversation will examine how human beings expand their capacity to hold complexity, embrace paradox, integrate multiple perspectives, and act with greater wisdom and compassion. Rather than viewing flourishing as a fixed destination, the session will explore it as an unfolding developmental process. What supports us at one stage of life may no longer be sufficient at another. As our awareness develops, our definitions of success, belonging, responsibility, and meaning may also evolve. Flourishing, in this sense, involves not only feeling well, but becoming increasingly capable of responding to life with depth, flexibility, discernment, and presence. The conversation will also consider embodiment: how development becomes meaning- ful when insight is lived through our relationships, choices, leadership, and ability to remain grounded amid uncertainty. Embodiment is where consciousness becomes visible. A central focus will be legacy. What do we leave behind as leaders, educators, healers, parents, and members of communities? Is legacy defined primarily by achievement and influence, or by the developmental conditions we create for others? Dr. Cook-Greuter will invite participants to consider legacy as the transmission of greater awareness, freedom, responsibility, and possibility to future generations. Positioned within the broader conference journey, this conversation will illuminate the developmental thread connecting consciousness, resilience, leadership, community, and human flourishing—and ask how individuals and societies can develop the inner capacity required to meet the outer complexity of our time. Session : Fear, Resilience, and Flourishing in an Uncertain World Dr. Mary Poffenroth Our human fear response was never built for today’s volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world. Fear, once a rare and life-saving signal, now hums in the background of ordinary life, shaping how we think, relate, and care. For those advancing mental health, it is both what we meet in the people we serve and what we carry in our own bodies. Biopsychologist and fear and courage researcher Dr. Mary Poffenroth reframes fear not as a weakness or pathology to erase, but as biology: an ancient, embodied system that, under chronic modern pressure, can quietly hijack our clearest thinking and capacity to connect. This keynote explores what fear does in the body and brain, why insight and willpower alone rarely hold in difficult moments, and how we can use the body to return to steadiness. Resilience, she shows, is not a fixed trait but a buildable skill—and flourishing becomes possible when fear no longer runs the show. Grounded in science and offered with warmth and humor, the session brings together biology, psychology, and whole-person wellbeing, giving participants a humane framework and simple embodied practices they can use themselves and adapt for the people and communities they serve. Together, we will explore how an uncertain world can become fertile ground for courage, connection, and genuine flourishing.
