WHY SWANSEA? • 97% of our publications across

Experimental, Applied, and Theoretical Physics were rated ‘world-leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’ (REF 2021). • Professor Lyn Evans, leader of the Large Hadron Collider project at CERN, is a significant Swansea Physics alumnus. • Professor Higgs Boson, the Physics Nobel Prize winner who proposed the Boson particle, is a Swansea University Honorary Fellow with close links to our department. • Our state-of-the-art facilities include: a low-energy positron beam with dedicated instrumentation for the study of positronium; continuous-wave and pulsed laser systems; scanning tunnelling electron and near-field optical microscopes; raman microscope; CPU parallel cluster; and the IBM-built ‘Blue C’ Super computer. • We have examples of students studying in CERN or gaining research internships within the department and our specialist courses stretch students into understanding the demands of research – whether that be in physics or closely aligned disciplines.

At Swansea University, our Department of Physics is dedicated to research in experimental, applied, and theoretical physics. Our work is supported by grants from various sources, including the EU, HEFCW, and industrial and government sources. With the new Sêr SAM programme, we're exploring advanced materials with low embodied energy for use in optoelectronics and bioelectronics. Our postgraduate programmes offer opportunities for students to delve deeper into areas such as next-generation semiconductors, hybrid conducting electronic-ionic materials, photodetection, and solar energy. Join us and be part of our exciting journey in the field of physics.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT • We offer a curriculum based on the research findings of our world-leading experts who have a wide range of research interests, including particle physics and cosmology; applied physics and materials; and atomic, molecular and quantum physics. • Projects will be shaped by participation in activities such as seminars, workshops, laboratory activity and fieldwork, as well as your involvement in one of our established research groups.

• The global nature of the research means that we have worldwide links and collaborators, including access to large-scale facilities such as CERN.

• Staff members lead the ALPHA collaboration at CERN, aiming to create, trap and manipulate anti-hydrogen.
