• Engineering Doctorate EngD FT
The Engineering Doctorate (EngD) is an alternative to the traditional PhD that combines the intellectual challenge of a PhD whilst gaining valuable industrial experience. As a Research Engineer (EngD student), your research will be industry-led and your project will involve working with a company. The programme includes a taught component, covering both technical, interpersonal and management training, furnishing you with the required skills to solve industrial problems, advance academic boundaries and ultimately excel in your career. The EngD scheme was established by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to provide ambitious and motivated graduates with doctorate-level training, putting new ideas into practice and progressing careers to reach senior positions in industry.
WHY SWANSEA? • Swansea has an established reputation for the Engineering Doctorate research programme, having run the scheme since its inception by the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) in 1992. • The 4-year programme combines an industry focused research project, defined and sponsored by an industrial partner, alongside technical, research and professional skills-based modules aimed to enhance the employability of our Research Engineers.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT As an EngD Student at Swansea you will benefit from: • Extending your knowledge and skills to become a future leader in industry • Enhancing your career opportunities and prospects • Gaining experience using the latest techniques through your own research project • Developing your expertise through a range of taught modules • Joining a network of fellow research engineers and industry contacts Previous Projects have included: • Coated transdermal sensors for diagnostic applications • Glass substrates for energy applications • Solvent Free: Exploiting sustainable paint technologies for steel products • Printing solar cells for future technologies • Advanced food packaging for a sustainable future • Development of coated silicon microneedles for vaccine smart patch
• Steps towards sustainability and decarbonisation – impact of high recycled content and advanced casting on high formability products • Novel anti-microbial metallic surfaces for infection control • Battery and ultracapacitor electrodes mapping by in situ spectroscopy • Scalable full back-contacted roll-to-roll perovskite photovoltaic modules utilising a commercial 3D embossed substrate • Development of silicon carbide devices for next generation surge protection
circuitry and power electronics • A new generation of functional
nanomaterials: solvent–free synthesis of size-selected nanoparticles, atomic imaging and applications in catalysis, medical sensing, quantum optics and energy • The effects of wind on the performance of amperometric sensors within smart air quality monitoring applications • Development of molecular vapor deposition methods for high integrated battery/device systems
