WHY SWANSEA? • The department has an excellent track record of supervising high quality, impactful dissertations, and research students work with staff to foster a dynamic academic community. • The department, together with the universities of Bangor and Cardiff, co-hosts ESRC Doctoral Training Partnerships in the thematic areas of Linguistics and Bilingualism. These partnerships offer scholarships to ensure the flow of highly qualified people into research careers both within and beyond academia. • All research students become part of our Graduate Centre, which provides pastoral as well as administrative support and is also responsible for research skills training and support, as well as facilitating a lively intellectual environment for the postgraduate research community. Students can also join our Language Research Centre, and benefit from bespoke events, training, and connections with their global network. • Based on our Singleton Park campus, in parkland overlooking Swansea Bay.

The English Language, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and Applied Linguistics section at Swansea University is internationally recognised for its exceptional research and education in language teaching and applied linguistics. Members of the department produce influential research in vocabulary studies, testing, second language acquisition, and other related areas. The department collaborates with leading institutions worldwide to advance the field, establishing a global network of professionals to further enhance the impact of its research and education.

with the skills and knowledge to engage successfully with the various contexts and challenges of language education. • Our programmes benefit from a close partnership with the University’s English language training unit, and with other language teaching practitioners. • Our programmes explore ways of analysing language knowledge and language use across a wide range of contexts, and relate closely to real world issues with crucial impacts on individuals and communities.

Laboratory offers access to state-of- the-art eye-tracker, reaction-time and experiment-builder software, corpus tools and video/audio recording facilities. Language Laboratories and an Interpreting Suite are also available for use. • A PhD in Applied Linguistics enables you to undertake a substantial project led by your own passions and interests. You would be closely supervised by enthusiastic staff who are members of the Language Research Centre (LRC). • The MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages offers a combination of theory and practical learning experiences, equipping you
