Project Examples As of this writing, I am performing oversight to the Owners and general Contractor of a 70,000 square foot medical center. Existing trench work and new trenches for a 40-year-old concrete, on grade substrate. The ASTM 710 is utilized as all flooring is moisture sensitive and with adhesive. The concrete surface is being shot blasted, use of grinding equipment to a surface profile, CP) of 2/3. This will enable the application of a moisture barrier to bond to the open surface. Then a Cementous self- level material is applied for a flat and smooth surface for the flooring installation. When the flooring is installed, again I will be performing oversight if the installation process. This is the before and during, working as a consultant/ inspector of the materials and labor process. Another project, 3 years in service, that is installed and being used, a resilient floor covering in a multipurpose room of a school. Moisture testing to the ASTM 2170 revealed elevated relative humidity however it could be within the adhesive tolerance, as the highest treading was 93% RH. “ Third-party inspectors work within their scope of expertise and are certified in specific flooring products, ensuring accurate evaluations and recommendations.”
Cutting a section of the resilient sheet goods, revealed water on top of the adhesive and the adhesive is still in a normal consistency. Further investigation revealed a environmental condition that is not contusive to moisture sensitive flooring products, as resilient. The HVAC system created a interior temperature of 74 F degrees with a 61% RH. Then discussion with maintenance personnel revealed the HVAC system has an incoming air system that brings in the exterior temperature and humidity with it. It is not recycling the interior air due to health concerns for the students. (Large number of people rebreathing in a room.). However this HVAC system created a condition known as concrete sweating, which is different than concrete moisture emission. There is no repair action available, replacement is the fix. This is working the after, as a flooring Inspector.
