Life is a Marathon, Not a Sprint
Since buying Wrigleyville Dental, I have been in “go-go-go” mode. After all, it was my first baby. In the beginning, I worked all the hours by myself when there were previously two dentists to do the job. After hours, I worked on setting up new, holistic protocols, brochures, manuals, hiring staff, etc. And I took courses and seminars to continue learning about the growing aspects of what I consider biological/holistic dentistry. Working 6–7 days/week was what I was used to since my residency program. Thankfully, I was able to grow the practice enough to hire other skilled dentists, so I can devote more time to my husband and our two daughters. But even on maternity leave, it was still my responsibility to make sure everything ran smoothly. Sometimes, we must pause and refuel before we can press the gas pedal to go full speed ahead again. I’ve come to the realization that it’s time for a refuel. For the past several New Year's, one of my resolutions has been “to find balance.” This year’s balance includes readjusting the amount of time I spend in various aspects of my life. Growing/sustaining Wrigleyville Dental, being a dentist, and playing mom and wife at home are all of my passions. And it’s really hard to grow the quality of Wrigleyville Dental without investing significant time on it. The Torah says that every seven years, you should “let the land rest.” This is interpreted to mean that every seven years, you should rest (or take a sabbatical) for one year. After 13 years of doing “hands- on” dentistry, my plans are to take a little sabbatical. I’m either way overdue, or I’m just a year shy; I am planning on stepping away from treating patients so I can focus on other things, like growing Wrigleyville Dental. Running a business is about quality service. We are a service industry, and our patients deserve the best dental treatment services in Chicago.
practice, including our office manager, Judy; general dentist, Dr. Shivani Patel; and pediatric orthodontist, Dr. Catherine Murphy. I’m very excited to have these women join our practice. You’ll find out more about them in future articles. I will also be launching a new website, publishing a book, and creating a better service experience during your office visits. You may see us implementing new technology, like a laser that can remove cavities without anesthetic, and services like PRF esthetic facial treatments that are one of the most natural and effective facial rejuvenation methods in the world (see page 4 of this newsletter for more details). Despite my years in the holistic dentistry field, there is still so much to know about natural, functional medicine and biological, holistic dentistry. There are several courses I will be taking to add new and/ or improved services into our practice, so we can expand our menu of comprehensive care. But my time won’t all be spent at Wrigleyville Dental. I also want to relish in my two girls, soak in the little ones before they’re not so little anymore and before Sonya goes off to kindergarten in the fall. The first years of life are when we have the most influence on our kids. And I want to be more present for them. For the last several months, my staff and I have been calibrating our treatment protocols and techniques so you can feel comfortable and confident receiving treatment from any of them. Our goal is for you to receive the best, most comprehensive whole- body dental care in Chicago. Although I’ll still be around, I won’t be seeing patients beginning in May, and I'll return when Sonya starts kindergarten. In the meantime, you’ll be in great hands with Dr. Anna Kolencherry, Dr. Shivani Patel and Dr. Catherine Murphy. I’ll be excited to see you again later this year. See you soon!
Here are a few things I will be working on during my hiatus: Initially, I will be focusing on integrating our new staff members into our

IT’S MORE THAN JUST TIDYING UP 4 Health Benefits of Spring-Cleaning
Sunday, March 20, is the first day of spring — which means it’s time for some spring-cleaning. Did you know that cleaning is not just about tidying up a physical space? It’s also about improving overall well-being. Here's how organization and cleanliness can help you in more ways than you might expect. SPRING-CLEANING REDUCES STRESS AND DEPRESSION. Tidiness and mental health are actually connected. Studies have found that having a clean home is directly correlated to happiness and your ability to focus. Anxiety can spike when laundry is piling up, items are strewn everywhere, and papers get scattered on various surfaces within the home. Clearing the clutter is a great way to boost your mood and increase those feel-good hormones. IT PREVENTS ILLNESSES. Doorknobs, refrigerator handles, light switches, countertops, and remote controls are all things we touch many times a day. Cleaning anything that’s used often is one way to reduce the spread of germs. By keeping household surfaces clean, we help thwart the spread of viruses and illnesses. SPRING-CLEANING HELPS YOU BREATHE BETTER. Spring often brings pollen that triggers allergies for many. But pollen isn't the only thing to blame when people have difficulty breathing.
When dust and pet dander build up in your home, your respiratory system is greatly affected too. Deep-cleaning your air filters and vents can make breathing effortless — and it’s truly amazing how this can improve your well-being. IT KEEPS YOU MORE ACTIVE. Off the couch and on your feet! Even just running the vacuum and clearing the clutter from the dining room table will get you up and moving, which is healthy for your heart and body.
This spring season, putting some elbow grease into your cleaning will benefit you in more ways than one. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later!
The Guide to Replacing Your Toothbrush What Is That on Your Toothbrush?!
If you're staying on top of your oral hygiene, you're probably brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing daily. But are you changing out your toothbrush often enough? If you've been using the same one for a few months now, it's likely time for a replacement. According to the American Dental Association, you should switch out your toothbrush for a new one every 3–4 months or when the bristles start to fray, whichever comes first. What is the reasoning behind this and what happens if you don't? The answer is actually pretty gross.
reinfected with a previous illness, another virus could develop over time. According to professionals, the bathroom is the perfect area for bacteria to grow. By dipping your toothbrush in boiling water or soaking it in alcohol, you can sanitize your toothbrush periodically before purchasing a new one. If you don't swap your toothbrush out before the bristles fray, your teeth and gums may suffer. Plaque, which is both sticky and colorless, is a layer of bacteria that forms on your teeth. If the bristles on your toothbrush are
damaged, they cannot effectively remove all the plaque or reach deep in between the teeth, which puts your teeth at risk for cavities and your gums at risk for gingivitis. Don’t want to throw out your old toothbrush yet? You can always repurpose it for cleaning purposes. It makes for a great kitchen or bathroom tool. To make sure you never keep the same toothbrush longer than you should, think of each season as needing its own brush or mark your calendar four months out as a reminder to replace your toothbrush to ensure the best health for your mouth and body.
If you don’t replace your toothbrush regularly, you’re putting your physical and oral health at risk. According to researchers at the University of Manchester in England, more than 100 million bacteria live on your toothbrush at any given moment, including E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus. In fact, researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham say fecal matter could be on your toothbrush as well. Don’t brush where you flush! When you put off getting a new toothbrush, more bacteria just build up and can potentially make you sick. While it isn’t likely you’d be

Zinc: An Essential Trace Element THE BENEFITS OF ZINC
An essential trace element, meaning it is present in small amounts in our living tissues, zinc plays a necessary role in the way our body functions, playing a large part in growth, immune function, wound healing, and fertility. Behind iron, it is the second most abundant of all trace minerals present within your body. Our bodies are unable to create or store it, meaning we must consume it in our diets. In some cases, such as during pregnancy, zinc supplements may be necessary to maintain optimum health. Have you ever considered taking zinc when you’re sick with a cold or a virus infection? It’s widely recommended because of the ability to boost your immune function, improving your body’s chance to fight off infections and sicknesses. Zinc is also known to have anti-inflammatory properties. In the body, zinc behaves like an antioxidant, which decreases oxidative stress. Links have been found between inflammation and oxidative stress and their connection to serious medical conditions. Zinc can also help your skin heal more quickly after it is wounded by increasing the amount of collagen. Low amounts of zinc have been linked to poor sperm production and serum testosterone levels. To ensure that your body receives enough zinc daily, consider adding supplements to your diet. Some foods with high zinc content include fortified breakfast cereal, dairy, red meat, poultry, and certain types of seafood. Keep in mind that because zinc is a trace mineral, you only need a small amount each day! To keep your body healthy, getting the right amount of zinc is essential. To ensure you’re taking the right amount for you, always check with your doctor or a medical professional.

Back Time
We Can’t Freeze Time But PRF Microneedling Can Turn Back Time!
Smoother, younger-looking skin is just around the corner with platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) microneedling. A new skin rejuvenation treatment, PRF, helps you to turn back the clock. Have you been noticing more fine lines on your face? Is your skin frequently exposed to the sun? Is your skin slowly lacking volume? A PRF facial, a non- surgical process, can naturally help your skin in many ways. The best part is that PRF is a completely natural process that utilizes your body’s platelets as its own anti-aging treatment. There are no artificial ingredients or chemicals. It’s 100% natural.
PRF can reverse this process by helping to encourage collagen production.
and discoloration. PRF fills in, and smooths any wrinkles or unevenness below your eyes.
IMPROVED AND REFINED SKIN TONE Poor blood flow, sun damage, poor skin care, and dehydration are just some of the many factors that negatively impact your skin tone, leading to dullness. To bring back a natural glow, PRF microneedling adds moisture and helps to encourage blood flow to your face. SMOOTHER SKIN If your skin is dry and coarse as a result of sun exposure, aging, acne scaring, scars or illness, PRF works to tighten and achieve softer, smoother facial skin. Sometimes, dead skin buildup can make skin appear uneven and PRF facials eliminate these dead skin cells. UNDER EYE CIRCLES The skin is very thin and delicate under your eyes, thus, more prone to wrinkles, fine lines,
SKIN ELASTICITY One of the great things about being very young is that your skin is so elastic, ready to bounce back from any imperfection. Elastin naturally occurs within your skin, but just like collagen, it withers away as you age. PRF microneedling helps your skin to produce more elastin to fight wrinkles and fine lines. This treatment is even effective before you have any wrinkles, a process we call pre -juvination. We are proud to announce that we are now offering facial esthetics with PRF microneedling. If you are interested in the many benefits of PRF, let us know. We are more than happy to discuss the process and the results you can expect from this cutting-edge treatment!
What results can you expect from PRF?
LESS WRINKLES PRF facials act to fill in and get rid of wrinkles while increasing elasticity and plumping your skin. As we age, wrinkles become more prominent as we lose 1% collagen per year, causing pockets of saggy and loose skin.
