Days 8-9: Kanazawa - Shirakawago In Kanazawa, meander through Kenrokuen - one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan, and visit a Samurai House. Stop in Gokayama for a hands-on washi paper making workshop, then travel to Shirakawago to explore the 300-year-old Gassho-style Wada House. Day 10: Takayama Browse the local handicrafts at the Miyagawa morning market before visiting Takayama’s museums. Stroll through the old town admiring the Edo-period architecture, and unwind in the onsen of your hotel. Day 11: Matsumoto Travel to Matsumoto to explore the 16th century Matsumoto Castle and learn about Japanese cuisine at a miso house and wasabi farm. Day 12: Yudanaka From Nagano, travel deeper into the Japanese Alps to see the snow monkeys bathe in the hot spring pools. Continue to Zenkoji, one of Japan’s most prolific Buddhist temples.
